the only people who get mad at that word are adults. or to be more specific, adults with retarded kids. get over it. none of my gay friends get mad when i call people fags, they know i'm not insulting them

Let's be honest: You sleep with anything that walks on two legs. Sometimes, you're not even that discriminating

Words have power whether you want them to or not. Even if you dont vest any power into them (yes their power derives from the fact we give them power) the fact that someone does means you have to contend with thst meaning. To some calling someome retarded is the same as calling someome a derp, but to others its offensive because your are making fun of someone at the expense of retarded people. Obviously the logical choice is to not use those words, but there is also a flip side. Do we have a right to not be offended? I dont think so. We can just as easily remove ourselves from the situation. So its all a wash in my opinion. Say what your comfortable saying knowing it could be offensive and if you are offended by something dont pretend you have a right to not be offended.

I thought "retarded" was the proper term for the mentally handicapped.

Yeah there are a lot of smart autistic people out there. My cousin has aspergers and he is over a year's worth ahead in high school credits. It could graduate this year at 16 but he is going to take an extra semester just so he doesn't have to go to college being so young.

That's very gracious of you to say, but yes, I am. I have aspergers, which falls under the umbrella of the autistic spectrum. The full disorder is extremely varied.

You seem to be a lucky one. I know a guy with aspergers who went to my university. Smart enough guy but he really couldn't read how others reacted to him. He, on occasion, just interupted a prof mid lecture to ask a question in his mind or would would walk up to some random person and ask them to edit his papers. He really wouldn't make eye contact and there wasn't a natural "hey how are you" etc. It was just hey can you edit my paper. The only way I can describe it is he doesn't have a filter that reads reactions of people well so he tends to be abrupt and robust in his approach.
