I thought I would make this thread because I've been thinking about the next generation and it reminds me of when the PlayStation 3 was just around the corner. I mean, I feel excited but mostly because I have no idea what to expect.
I don't think anyone could have predicted, around 2005 and 2006, that we would be playing Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Journey towards the end of the current generation. At the same time, I feel bummed out realizing that a lot of great JRPGs are pretty much exclusive to handhelds and that it's taking a long time for developers to release promising titles like Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
So what is the best thing about the start of a new generation? Is it the E3 presentations where developers showcase their games, the serious but cool teasers and commercials advertising "something revolutionary", or just the simple fact that people have a lot to talk about? Are you looking forward to the next-generation or do you feel like it won't be as exciting as it was 6 to 7 years ago?

You know I am. I expect great things form the next-generation in terms of hardware power and what exactly games can do. I'm really hoping we see more of a focus on AI and physics than graphics though.
As for developers taking too long to release games? It seems some of the Japanese developers *coughsquareenixcough* have simply become incompetent when it comes to managing their title productions. It doesn't seems like it's really the hardware's fault.Last edited by Rapture; 05-13-2012 at 05:41.

Not really. I don't care much for my PS3 as it is at this point. I'm not finding anything all too interesting, or anything that makes me want to play so badly. At this rate, I'm going to skip the next playstation.
Unless Zone of the Enders 3 comes out on the next generation. Then I'm buying.I once ate a dirty sock...don't tell anyone.

Not too sure yet. For one thing, its just another expensive console to buy. Plus I don't even want to imagine game prices.
The hardware should be great, but I was also not too fond of any of this gen's launch titles. Besides R:FoM I suppose.
The one thing I really want to see are more console JRPGs, and more varied games overall. This gen has been crammed with too many generic shooters. Developers need to start focusing on creating masterpieces again, and memorable experiences. Not just sales.__________

I'm still excited for current gen. I am in no rush for the next. Games like Dust 514, Starhawk, Twisted Metal (on the way!), Diablo 3, Guild Wars 2 etc are going to greatly increase the PS3's life for me. Move, 3D, Vita, exclusives, all my personal preferences are being catered for by Sony so their next console is not needed just yet.
I am very interested to see which of the patents filed make it into their next console though. I want to see how the evolve the 3D experience. Sony recently attached a Move to their personal 3D viewer and had head tracking on Datura. They also had the patent for interactive 3D. I also want to see the next 3D Eyetoy and Move 2.0.PSU GHOST SYNDICATE - DUST 514 Media HUB - Podcast - BLOG (Soon™)

Neutral atm. I'll be excited when we get true virtual reality simulators that put you in the action. I'm talking on levels like the movie Gamer and The Matrix. You pay for the game, download it to your brain cpu and play it, with online leaderboards and everything. That's the gaming I want. I wanna be immersed with my mind, body and "soul".

Excited? yes!
But will not jump onboard for a year (or two)
and please get more jrpgs this time. Its like Blacksite said, jrpgs are now exclusive to handhelds (which obviously sucks)

YEAAAAHHHHhhhhh oh wait, no.
not really. I, like the rest of the world, don't have the disposable income. So, it's cool if the big 3 wants to make new consoles, but I personally won't get any of them for a long time.

Not to mention that you also have to upgrade to a new HDTV with "ultraHD". That'll take a blow to your wallet. I better start playing the goddamn lotto!

Not excited, more curious really with all the rumors going around, it is going to be interesting to see what they release.

People don't have to have money or buy anything to be excited. I'm very interested to see what the next generation hardware can bring to the table.... aesthetics, AI, various aspects of levels and characters.
The next generation is full of intriguing possibilities, and I'm open minded to see where everything goes. I don't even have a PS3, haven't for over 6 months and I'm not sure when I'd even have expenses for a new console. Doesn't mean I'm not excited to see what's next.
There won't be any new HD standard. Doesn't even make sense, no practical assets or market for it.

I'm still greatly enjoying my PS3 but am also excited about new hardware. As for JRPGs I dont really care for them at all so it doesn't bother me that they have pretty much died out on consoles. Keep bringing the western developed games.

I have a feeling all coming generation will evolve only in Graphics,it will fail on every other aspect,we will continue to see a very linear so called cinematic experience games that people over praise,we will continue to see companies ignoring what people wants and make what they want,we will continue to see companies only care about money and milking their franchises, consoles will become more like a PC but without the ability of upgrading it because manufacturers will focus more on multimeda, social and web apps rather than gaming. And a lot of other stuff that makes me worry about the future of gaming especially console wise.I'm not optimistic at all.People need to know that it's not all about hardware power,it's what this power will serve.

A lot of games this generation ran sub-HD anyway. I can't see uHD making a head anytime soon. Maybe they'll be pushing 1080, or close to it. Don't think any PS3 games ran full HD to start with. GT5 and WipEout HD were both scaled (only games I can think of off the top of my head). Might be wrong about that part, but the list is very small if anything. That might be more limiting than anything else.

Hey don't shoot the messenger, I'm just speaking on what I read on CES2012 and they showcased UltraHD, and they were boasting of how it'll be here in the next few years.

@rbrtchng I'm the same way. I rent most of my games and the PS3 is the only console I bought with my own money. And it was still a lot of money to spend even 2 years after it initially came out.
@Abdou23 I fear the same. It seems like a lot of people are obsessed with graphics. But man I'd like something to be engaging more so than looking pretty.
I'm not even close to finishing things up for this gen. I'm more excited about the games than I am the tech that comes with the consoles. I just made myself a list and it's about 20 games long I'd like to play. I have a ways to go!

Whilst new hardware and the next-gen is always very exciting, I'm completely satisfied with my PS360 right now. I'll probably jump on the next consoles a year or so after they've been out, it's always dry in the beginning in terms of games and I wanna avoid any technical hitches the first batch consoles might have

honestly im not sure about next gen. new thech is always great, but i thing there is nothing more that can be done in games. better visuals, better physics, etc not save it from lack of ideas and creativity.
