Naughty Dog recently commented on the graphics engine update for their upcoming Playstation 3 exclusive title, The Last of Us. You can check out the latest screenshots from the action-adventure game in the slideshow to the left of this article and the details below.

The latest “PlayStation Blogcast” podcast episode includes an audio interview with Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley from Naughty Dog. The pair mentioned that the first gameplay demo that was shown to the press recently was actually an old build from January. They are currently “pushing a lot more environments” with the newer build. The lighting engine from Uncharted has evolved in The Last of Us as Naughty Dog is going with the more ambient approach (because the environments in The Last of Us have no electricity). Finally, they mentioned that they are trying to ground players into the same reality as Ellie, Joel and the hunters by reinforcing the art direction, lighting engine, rendering style and textures.

Naughty Dog is the developer behind The Last of Us. The Playstation 3 exclusive title will be released in North America sometime in late 2012 and early 2013.

I think even the truck looks better than Uncharted 3 and it's an old version. TLOU is looking to become the new bar raiser that probably wont be surpassed this gen by anyone else on consoles.

ND always pull a rabbit out of the hat to beef up the graphics after they already look great(imo). After recently showing the public an older demo, I have a feeling we'll be getting something totally new for e3 next month.

This. Also so is Cage with his Kara demo that was on a 2 year old version of his new engine. While many devs have bitched and moaned about the complications of the CELL, they have often said that those who devote themselves to it can create amazing things. This is evident by Quantic Dream and Naught Dogs efforts. I think these two know the engine better than anyone else.

So I'm guessing this will be a semi-open world title. Similar to the older Resident Evil titles. I mean, I doubt it'll be linear, just for the simple fact that with the debut trailer, we were presented with a larger world to explore but, at the same time, I can't imagine it being a fully-fledged open world title without affecting the visuals. The latest trailer also looked like a very early cinematic.

If I recall correctly from the info in the info from game informer, it is a semi-open world title. More open than uncharted but they still want to guide the player somewhat.

Right, they still have a story to tell but the gameplay should allow for less corridor/hallway stuff.
