If PS4 isn't a sizable upgrade I won't be upgrading any time soon... Maybe I'll get a gaming pc. I've been doing some gaming on my laptop lately (using dualshock 3 controller) and it's great.

Also a ton of amazing games have been running on the Unreal Engine 3 this generation. It would be beneficial if Sony made Epic happy this generation rather than making a console that is more challenging to develop games on (using Unreal Engine).

But really, if PS4 isn't a big upgrade, then why make a new console right now? Just to compete with the next Xbox? Somebody said this is all just speculation, that wouldn't surprise me. Also I'm sure Epic Games will put some version of their new engine on PS4 no matter what. If this is all true then I bet they're pretty annoyed that the new consoles won't have the specs to make the most of their engine.

All the information about UE4 points to a biggest upgrade for a long time.

They have been working on it for last 5+ years and tool chain and work flow has changed radically.
There is no more baked lighting, so worlds can be a lot more dynamic and development time is reduced. (no more need for lightmap rendering farm.)

According to rumors more news should be available within couple of weeks.

I don't believe this, completely bs. guys, I wouldn't take that article to heart. read the article first, there are so many mistakes that you can tell the writer of that articles main point was that he BELIEVES the consoles wont be powerful enough to support that engine. Epic never said anything about it so that guy wouldn't know anything about anything. o.O

    Remember the Samaritan demo?
It was running on Unreal Engine 3 but EPIC said that it was actually more like 3.9573 so our current consoles are already running UE3.9573

How do we know that the Samaritan demo was running on our current consoles?

EDIT: Oh, you're saying that since it's UE3, it should be possible with enough power...but then, that's the problem, isn't it? Power.

It doesn't matter if it's still 3.x, it requires more power.

I personally don't think they would do that...any developer could come out and say, "Hey, we're making this engine, you better make your console fit it." Because if given the right funding and skill, any developer can come up with an engine that even a PC can't run.

So it's all down to business, if they do push it, they will be pushed out themselves from profits and it will hurt them more than Sony/MS.

If I remember correctly, the Samaritan tech demo was running on three GeForce GTX 580s. I don't know what build current-gen titles like BioShock Infinite are running on, just that they're "modified" versions of Unreal Engine 3.

The engine that rendered Samaritan was the same as the one used for gears of war 3. Ofcourse it didn't have all the fancy dx11 tessellation, depth of field and reflections etc. in GOW3 but the engine was the same.

The reason I brought it up was because some people said that the next consoles will not be powerful enough to run UE4 and I wanted to remind them that it doesn't matter what power the console will have, the engine can run on the hardware, it just wont be as visually appealing (as seen in the samaritan vs GOW3)

Also btw EPIC showed the updated samritan running only on a single gtx680 earlier this year. They have already optimized the tech to run on almost a third of what was required last year.

You DO know that engines help gameplay and physics too, right? It's not just about graphics.

Ah I see what you mean, another reason why I don't think they would come out and say this.
