Epic games must understand that consoles are for the mass consumer market and MS and Somyarent willing to market a high price game machine just to meet their needs. Both ps4 and 72o dev kits have already went into production so it will cost the companies more money to go back and redesign them just for the sake of epic games. Funny part Crytek and Dice hasn't approach MS and Sony about the next gen consoles not being powerful enough.

I guess UE4 will be a PC exclusive engine then, which is what Epic said would be the case if Sony and MS didn't step up to their needs. I don't really care.

Kojima has his Fox Engine, DICE and Crytek have theirs, Ubisoft have the Anvil...It's not the end of the world.

It's not about graphics anymore Epic. Make fun games first, then worry about the graphics. If next gen, graphics are 2x better than now, with heavily improved loading times, much better AI, seamless OS, yadda, yadda, yadda, I'll be the happiest camper in the planet.

funny how quickly some forget Epic's role in ensuring good specs this gen.
this is GOOD pressure from them. they know what is possible, and what gamers will want to see in the future. MS and sony want to keep costs down to increase profit.
UE is rarely the most powerful engine on the planet each gen - if they are worried about the consoles specs i think its pretty reasonable that we all should be.Got YLOD? In the UK? I'll buy it off you.

I highly doubt this is the case. Considering how many console games used the unreal engine and the limited PC gaming market, there is too much at stake for epic to not get UE4 on the next xbox and PS4.
And if the rumor that the next xbox's gpu is based on AMD's Southern Islands design is true (instead of the successor, Sea Islands) , even then I see that as being powerful enough for UE4.
And Epic can always lay on MS to get them to make changes. Remember they caused MS to spend another billion dollars to double the RAM on the 360.
And if the development cycle of the next xbox is anything like the 360, the final chip designs won't be ready till the spring of 2013.

I can care less if UE4 can't be run on next gen consoles. Graphics are great already, time to focus on other aspects.

No matter the power, UE4 will be on the next consoles like BBK said because the FIRST thing devs need in an engine is the ability to scale to the appropriate hardware.

Doubt it has much to do with profits, as PS3 showed gamers won't spend much on a console.
Only thing I'd want in a PS4 is a PS3 with a shit load of RAM. I'd hate to see next gen consoles getting shiny new graphics when todays graphics are good enough. We need better gameplay now.

Guys, the guy who wrote this article is a moron.
He comments about something that supposdly was written 4 days ago on Wired.
It was infact POSTED 4 days ago on Wired and said by Cliffy B back in FEBUARY.
BEFORE THEY SHOWED UE 4 OFF.
It’s late February, a week before the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where Epic will be unveiling UE4 for the first time outside of the office. Reps from Microsoft, Sony, Nvidia, and the most influential game developers in the industry will be seeing the demo behind closed doors; the NDA-only affair will be Epic’s first and best chance to convince them that the future of gaming is unlike anything they previously imagined. “There is a huge responsibility on the shoulders of our engine team and our studio to drag this industry into the next generation,” says Cliff Bleszinski, Epic’s design director. “It is up to Epic, and Tim Sweeney in particular, to motivate Sony and Microsoft not to phone in what these next consoles are going to be. It needs to be a quantum leap. They need to damn near render Avatar in real time, because I want it and gamers want it—even if they don’t know they want it.”.......For his part, though, Sweeney is a bit more diplomatic. “We’re much more in sync with the console makers than any other developer is,” he says. “That means we can give detailed recommendations with a complete understanding of what is going to be commercially possible.” In other words, Epic has seen the specs of proposed new consoles and is actively lobbying for them to be more powerful.
1/ NOWHERE DOES EPIC STATE THEY HAVE SEEN THE SPECS OF THE MACHINES. IT'S ASSUMED BY THE WRITER.
2/ NO WHERE DOES EPIC SAY THAY ARENT POWERFULL ENOUGH

Why does everyone still think that all they're talking about is graphics? It's not just graphics but the algorithms and the technology behind everything. Showing off the engine with a graphical powerhouse demo in real-time usually equates to a game that's half as good in graphics, has a crapload of AI and physics, and a much larger terrain with far less popups. Not sure about everyone else but I'm not going to be stuck with the current console generation graphics, if you guys do then fine, but the PC is already WAY beyond the consoles now and in 5 years after the next generation the differences will be spectacular!
If consoles don't up their game then I can see the PC having a resurgence, not that it's already still topping game sales year upon year.
So you DO CARE then? Why can't people get this simple sentence right? -_-

Epic games will find a way to force, Microsoft and Sony to make their hardware powerful whether they want to or not. Once they reveal their engine on E3, gamers will want that to be possible for next generation. It's not about prettier graphics and a million more particles then current generation, it's about new innovations and development that is considered impossible today. The way the engine is described, it's one impressive piece of tech.

Graphics always look good towards the end of a home console's lifecycle. But I guess it's a crime to expect better graphics when making the jump to next-gen hardware. And who says gameplay, physics, story, and innovation has to be sacrificed for an upgrade in visuals? There are multiple people assigned to do different things within a single development studio.
Besides, a lot of the great games released over the years like Rocksteady's Batman titles and Mirror's Edge were all powered by Unreal Engine 3 technology. And the same thing goes for upcoming titles like BioShock Infinite. With development costs likely rising, I doubt that'll change with Unreal Engine 4.Last edited by Blacksite; 05-22-2012 at 20:26.

The Unreal engine has powered a wide variety of games so if Epic are unhappy with what they've got to work with, it's worth listening to them.
Having said that, I'm repeating myself here when I say the hardware won't be as spectacular as the numerous articles and hopes have suggested. Console gaming is, at least where the hardware is concerned; about tightly controlled costs - in comparison to PC. People won't pay for the hardware. Thus, if the consumer won't spend; the market won't build.
Each generation will really just be about incremental upgrades, in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that Epic would be the loser here if they didn't create an engine exclusive to the consoles rather than forcing them to make a console around their engine.
Praise the lord for Ni No Kuni!
