The Last of Us not coming until 2013

Naughty Dog has been cagey about the release date for The Last of Us, which should have been our first indication the game’s probably not coming out this year. Now, we definitely know that’s true.

The studio was part of Jimmy Fallon’s now-annual video game week, and last night included a brief demo of The Last of Us, one of E3’s most talked about games.

At the end of the segment, which played out like a truncated version of the playthrough at Sony's press conference (sans shotgun blast to the face this time), Fallon asked game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann when we’ll finally get to play The Last of Us. Their answer? 2013.

I’d say it’s pretty likely The Last of Us avoids the increasingly crowded February 2013, but with God of War: Ascension already scheduled for March 12, it's unclear where The Last of Us fits. Maybe late spring?

I was hoping for a Spring 2013 release, personally. But like mooninites said, they could always take the extra time to polish the title.

Ohh I don't see it taking that long. I would say April/early May. Right before summer break for the kids and after the tax season. November just seems to far away. Besides if it is going to take that long I would imagine it would be like October instead because it would beat out the door Battlefield/COD Reloaded.

Does it really need that much longer. It has been in production for a while now. To me that should then put their other project ready for PS4 possibly...

I think it'll be early 2013. They're not gonna want PS4 stuff, which will probably be revealed next E3, to overshadow it.

If they do plan that then yeah it will make sense to release the game in Spring.

I actually wasn't interested in this game until I saw it at E3. It has sort of mysterious and survival thriller vibe to it.

Haha it had better be Q2 at least... November 2013? By then I will have completely forgotten about the damn game, my hype would have fallen. Isn't Microsoft trying to roll out their new console next year also?

Despite the lack of any official announcement, I'm 100% sure next-gen consoles are coming Holiday season next year.Anything other than that would be stupid and unacceptable.

There will be the new XBOX or PS or both next year, you can quote this post if you want. If MS release first it would be mad for Sony to give them a lead again.

If Uncharted 4 isn't announced at this years VGA, The Last of Us will come out in November 5, 2013.

I doubt it'll be late 2013, that's probably when we'll see PS4. I also can't seeing it being early 2013 either (MAYBE January) due to GoW Ascension in March. Both of these are Sony's biggest developers/titles, releasing within 2 months of each other would be a stupid.
