Whatever they have done in the past, doesn't really matter does it? The excitement is for what they are bringing to the table now.
The only company with a radically redesigned and re-imagined OS, spreading compatibility amongst all the new devices (win 8 phones, tablets, PC's, Xbox)...
There is a lot of basis for being excited about what MS is hoping to accomplish.
Of course, there will be haters, but even the most jaded of techies has to be interested to see if Smart Glass and Win 8 stuff really grabs hold and works as promised.

it was better when they treated it as an obligation. when it comes to design, the simpler the better. But somewhere between the launch of the Xbox 360 and the release of Vista, Microsoft started to approach design—industrial, UI and UX—with genuine interest, instead of treating it as an obligation.

Steve Sinofsky is the reason MS has taken a dramatic change in their Windows & Window hardware ideology.
In my opinion he saved MS.

Yes, I'm not fond of Mattrick one bit. I'm not discussing who he is as a person or how he comes across but I'm not very fond of his business decisions nor the direction he has taken the XBOX brand in the last 2-3 years.
Peter Moore was a better fill for the position imo.
I'd rather see Phil Harrison take the position honestly.
