Killing can't or never will be justified. It doesn't matter how you spin it, but unfortunately it must be done because there's no way to get a message across in this case.

Of course not. As a japanese descendant, I strongly disagree about the use of WMD.
What happened on Pearl Harbor is called TACTICS. That doesn't justify using Atomic bombs, killing innocents in the process.“Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man, you take it.”- Malcolm X

During the war people saved everything they could to donate to the war effort grease metal money ect. Ect. This whole civilian thing didn't exist until the Geneva convention wich didn't come about until after ww2 and if you look Japan was using biological warfare in the Pacific. You ever wondered why asia hates japan do yourself a favor and read some history.

I am stunned that some people appear to love their Playstation(1,2,3) or Xbox(360) more than I love the Denver Broncos.
Trust me, it's sad

War is never justified, people are never satisfied, they always want more power, wealth and well this person said it better:
amabO: " At some point they will force their will upon others to achieve their aims, even if it's forcing others to accept their ideology. Look at the history of the world. It's nothing but nations and kingdoms overunning each other. When someone forces themselves against your will and well being, it's time to fight and destroy them before they destroy you. You cannot reason with a person or people that wants to subdue you. War comes down to a fundamental principle of the natural world: kill or be killed. Like any use of force, wisdom uses temperance and knows at what point to stop without becoming like the enemy."

Yes collateral damage if they would have had the opportunity to do the same thing Japan would have. War sucks but you have to fight to win or else you end with police actions and perpetual war

The argument that "our enemies would have done it to us so that means that we can do it" is a flawed one...
Does that mean that Jews can have their own Final Solution against Aryans?

That was then, this is now.
“Didn’t we have some fun though? Remember when the platform was sliding into the fire pit and I said ‘Goodbye’ and you were like ‘NO WAY!’ and then I was all ‘We pretended we were going to murder you’? That was great."

People are trying to justify the use of atomic bombs by saying "war is always bad" "there's nothing that could have been done" etc
To me that is just what the guilty say to themselves to feel better.
I strongly disagree with the expression "all is fair in love and war" because that's is not true. Even a hideous thing like war can be won by following set morals and rules and an atomic bomb defies all of those.

And yet no one wants to give an alternative to the use of the atomic bombs.

... not sure what you are talking about...

this debate is hardly new... and there have been plenty of suggested alternatives... but as numerous posters have suggested... hindsight is 20/20... and there may have been circumstances that made said alternatives ineffective...
you don't know. I don't know.
but maybe...

What?!
Are you saying the war couldn't be won with out atomic bombs? BullSh*t
All you had to do was to make the enemy run out of resources before you do. If they are aggressive, they will run out faster.
It's evident that USA didn't JUST wanted to win. They wanted to boast about it too, no matter the cost. Instant vaporisation of innocent civilians just to send a message?! That's low no matter how you look at it. and I'm not bitiching about US, anyone who wreaks that kind off havock has no justification what so ever.Last edited by itachi73378; 06-29-2012 at 00:26.

He didn't say that.
Japan's waters were already blocked and many of the military ports and bases were already gone, yet the Japanese people continued to stand and engage in a futile war. Japan was self-sufficient in several aspects at the time, such as food, so the only way to end the war would have been an invasion. Arguably so this would have extended the war for years and likely lead to more deaths than the bombs did.
I don't see what there was to boast about. The US warned the Japanese that they were to evacuate the city and the weapon was dropped only after hesitation. It was used to quickly and decisively end World War 2 - which it surely accomplished - and also to see the effects of the bomb on a city. Even after the first nuclear weapon was dropped Japan instigated martial law and was still prepared to fight -- it was clear that Japan would have fought to the end had the bombs not been used.-No Feeble Cheering-
