Before you upgrade your ps3 to a 1 TB hard drive please read very important.

So like a lot of you i ran out of hard drive space thanks to sony and playstation plus i decided on a 800 gig hard drive at first noticed it wasn't enough space with all of my titles 197 playstation 3 titles 37 minis games 40 psone classics and to top it all off one turbo grafx game bonks adventure and maximo for ps2 classic and even my ps vita storage so i decided to take the plunge as it where to upgrade to a 1TB western digital scorpio blue hard drive here are all the issues and questions that came up during the upgrade and all the answers you could want.

    1. does the drive require modding to be installed: Answer: No

    2. Does it help improve the system's loading time: Answer: No

    3. does netflix still work after install: Answer: yes

    4. Do we have to sacrifice something to gain this extra hard drive usage: Yes

    Here are the issues:

    1. blu-ray playback 1TB Hard drive constantly goes into sleep mode because of this you cannot use chapter skip while watching a blu-ray movie however you can choose the chapter of which you want to start from from the menu if you attempt to use chapter skip on your ps3 controller it will play video with no sound then freeze and you have to restart the ps3 console from a hard reboot by pressing the power button this is a sony issue because the firmware is telling the console to power down the drive.

    2. Downloading games and media : adds 1 1/2 minutes to a download this includes movies games and even photo's

Far from that i am hoping that sony releases a firmware update that is compatible with the new 1 TB hard drives shortly because the hard drive going to sleep is a real pain in the backside

I think the drive going to sleep is the actual drive itself its meant for laptops so it may go to sleep automatically to save power, WD may be the ones that need to release the firmware.

there was another drive that had some other issue related to sleeping a while back.

Can't say exactly what my drive is but it's a 750GB Seagate one. Haven't noticed any issues with it.

The new update adds an option to go to sleep after 2 hours, check to see if that's turned off under Power Save settings.

There's only a 5400rpm and 7200 rpm that I know of. I advice against the latter as it doesn't do anything new for your console and instead just overheats faster compared to the 5400.

If you want a faster drive your only option is an SSD, 7200 does jack shit.

IT does help but it mostly helps when installing downloaded games and patches you may get anything up to 1 full minute faster install times depending how large the file is.

When using a Raptor (10,000rpm) to install GranTurismo prologue it was almost 3 full minutes faster install time the standard 5400RPM drive.

Just get a 5400rpm drive, don't worry about the money you'll be spending extra on the SSD for performance improvements you won't really see except installing and loading. You'll spend more money for less space. Not a good idea.

I love my 750gb 7200rpm hdd. As mentioned above, installing games and such is where you get the performance boost from the 7200rpm drive. Any little bit helps.

It'll most likely be the hard drive with its low power enhancement chip newer laptop hard drive have them now so they can power down when they are not needed to save battery life somehow it seems to be working in the PS3 I thought it would of been using commands from the power saver program within the operating system like Windows XP/VISTA/7/Linux etc but maybe the PS3 has one too,.

Also remember to a avoid HDDs with drop protection. The PS3 does not support the feature and it can cause lag and more HDD noise.

I'm very happy with my 7200 WD Black. And the temp difference is negligible. You get much higher temps with a stock 5400 drive just by living in a warmer country.

I'm with Lethal on this one, every little helps.
