I am completely done with military FPS.
If i buy anything considered a FPS is has to be different.
Examples - Borderlands 2 (FPS-RPG) and Metro: Last Light (FPS-Horror)

Yes. It can be fun in small doses and with the right people. But overal there's just not enough variety in the genre.

Now I may have done bad research but I'm fairly sure, Battlefield came before Call of Duty, so everyone stating CoD was the first FPS to bring the genre to its true hype is ridiculous. But hey, that's just me.

Agreed. Metro 2033 was a refreshing departure from the pre-cooked FPS lot. Can't wait for Last Light

This is the reason for stagnation. Every damn game is copying the control scheme and are trying to sell the game for CoD audience. Only some rare games truly feel unique anymore. I even got CoD-feeling from Serious Sam 3.

Yep. Less and less do we see games that feel different, since all of them want to hop on the CoD money train and ride it until the industry dies.

To be fair, CoD never did anything all THAT 'different' with 4, just did it all better. Unfortunately, nothing has matched it.. not even close.

I find it amusing how CoD gets blamed for other games trying to be like it. In my opinion CoD perfected the control scheme for a FPS on a console

This bitch stagnated ages ago. Bioshock Infinite, Aliens, Borderlands and Dishonored save it from its military wankery.

Yes I think that lately it has been pretty stagnent. Used to love the genre on pc but got bored,Then Mirrors Edge came out(loved that game) course I don't think that was a fps just a great game in the fp. Actually all games this genre have gotten kinda stagnent.

What annoys me most about shooters thesedays is that they hold our hands with on screen prompts, we are not idiots.

    • Walk up to a door "press X to open door"
    • Walk up to a wall "press X to jump over/cover"
    • If our Weapon is low on ammo "Press X to reload" or "low ammo"
    • Crappy weapon balance due to too many weapons
    • And last of all Big fuck off icons in the middle of the screen that show where the objectives are so we cannot see where the enemies are.

There's no real innovation anymore. It's what happens anytime some form of media get real popular. Instead of game changers, more and more developers try to release the same product. Because they know it will sell.

Dust looks like it could be a nice change of pace. If enough people play Planetside 2 like they did the first one that game will be badass, but I doubt it. Look at MAG. MAG was fun as hell if you had a good squad of close friends, but when you're matched randomly with people they try to go all Modern Warfare on it and Rambo everything it would ruin matches. We don't get games like Breakdown anymore where they try to immerse you in the character, and Bioshock infinite is taking it's sweet time in development. Deus Ex HR was incredible, but it's not a true FPS.

But with games like Dishonored coming out, I believe you're going to see games start to break the mold again.

That's pretty much why I enjoy games like Half-Life, Half-Life 2 and its subsequent episodes more than whatever military-themed FPS is currently on the market. The developers aren't guiding you through the game with on-screen prompts or icons that get in the way of the action. It also ruins the immersion.

It should be up to the player to keep track of their ammo. Slide locked back and can't shoot anymore? That's a better indication than "press x to reload"

And yeah BF3 may be the worst HUD I've ever played with.

If there is an ammo counter then there is no need for the "low ammo" warning.

The HUD is bad, worse on PC because it has the text chat window int he top left of the screen but thankfully it can br hiden by pressing "H" key but the rest has to stay always on.

I don't think you can call the FPS genre stagnating. If anything, it's flourishing. More and more FPS games are releasing. Call of Duty has definitely taken the crown of FPS, whether not you like it. There may not be necessarily new mechanics being brought forth, this generation has brought a flood of shooters. Sales wise, shooters lead the way in many aspects.

To me, it's hard to label a genre is stagnating unless it brings forth no new innovations and has difficulty bringing sales. Right now, FPS games are the safest avenue for developers to make.

MAG relied too heavily on team cooperation which is very rare in shooters. When we had leaders who actually gave us orders the game was a blast to play. One time we had a terrible leader, Lol, but he communicated with everyone and was enthusiastic enough to gather all of us together and hit us up on the plans he had which the first few failed big time but eventually we managed to pull it off with a clever pincer attack.

The genre to me is boring but I'm sure I will come to like it again in the future.
