Carrying these aspects/features;
- Realism
- Crash/Break Realism
- Proper Physics
- Long Lasting Gameplay / Replay Value
- Tons of Cars
- Car Customization
If you have any ideas please let me know.

Gran Turismo 5 is by far your best bet. The crash physics are not great, but it has everything else you mentioned on that list. Over 1000 cars and hours of gameplay...and if you think you're done, you're not. You still have b-spec and the bi-weekly online updates of new races made up by the team. Not to mention an active online community who are still racing.

GT5 without a doubt with the exception of car customization options. In that dept. Forza 4 definitely wins. But as an overall racing simulator GT5 is the king. And GT5 wins in graphics as well IMO.

I'd definitely go with Shift 2: Unleashed. If you want tracks that are realistically bumpy and have other surface irregularities, and cars with suspension that actually responds to those irregularities - which is at least half the challenge of real racing. GT5 feels like steering a block of wood around a coffee table in comparison. And I'm at lever 40 A-spec and B-spec and 98% game completion in GT5. The selection of real-life tracks in Shift 2 also makes GT5 look silly in comparison.

Shift 2 is indeed better than GT5 in areas, such as you mention. However, GT5 has a much larger fanbase, has many more cars, more tracks and better replay value with its online feature set. Shift tends to over exaggerate the sim feeling though. There really is only one game that I have found that is a console game that nails the simulation physics better than all of them, and that is Race Pro by Simbin (makers of racing sims on PC).

Unfortunately, the support is long gone, as is the community. It is one of the most underrated racing games on console to date. So there really is no replay value in this game any longer.

If you played Grid, the thing to beware when playing GT5 is that it's not as forgiving as Grid.
What everybody said so far is right. I'd also add that whereas GT5 is absolutely amazing at the driving physics, some of the "game" aspects are a bit lacking, like the campaign balance and the stupid A-spec points.
As a pure racing simulation, though, nothing beats it on the ps3.

I have GT5 and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. GT5 is obviously better. But I wish it had the crash scenes that NFS has. Let's face it, crashing is a part of racing. High speed crashes that flip cars, leave drivers injured, and leave cars totaled. Gran Turismo has never embraced that.
.. Borderlands GOTY .. Final Fantasy XIII .. Wet .. Mirror's Edge .. Mass Effect 2 .. Gran Turismo 5 .. Dead Rising 2 .. Need for Speed: Most Wanted .. Little Big Planet .. Little Big Planet 2 .. Heavy Rain .. Madden 10 .. NCAA Football 10 .. Sims 3 .. Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds .. HAWX .. NBA Jam ..

GT5 has the best everything besides customization or if you have xbox go Forza 4 which is awesome too. I definitely recommend a driving wheel for either

I just threw up in my mouth. Worst handling/drive feel in a game I've ever played. Those cars are not realistic. The track selection is awful, it's heavily based on arcade style XP rank up. The OP is looking for a realistic game not a kiddy arcade racer. Yes I've played both to the full extent and to this date GT5 is still 10x better.

I'd have to agree on what you say about Shift 2. Something about it just felt...off. I mean, I'm no racer IRL but the cars felt way too bouncy/floaty and unstable or something, and most times quite unresponsive. Was playing with the DualShock though, so maybe it's optimized for Wheels. Having said that, I did change some of the advanced controller settings in the options and the game felt a bit better but still off. GT5 and Forza felt lightyears ahead to me.
To the OP, I'd have to suggest GT5. What it lacks in cumbersome menus and crap customisation it makes up for in features and of course the most important aspect - gameplay. The load times are massively improved from 'vanilla' GT5 too and the Spa track [dlc] is absolutely beautiful.Last edited by Nitey; 07-10-2012 at 23:29.

Yeah I didn't feel bad for my wallet or anything after Shift 2. Got it as part of PS+
