Julien Merceron, technology director at Square Enix, has stated his belief that developers are growing tired of the current generation of home consoles, and as such are turning their attention elsewhere. Speaking to GI.biz, Merceron reckons platform holders Sony and Microsoft made a massive mistake in stretching the lifecycle of PlayStation 3 an...

He's not wrong. This generation has out stayed its welcome now. Sure it's still has good games out and more games coming out but it's time we moved on to bigger, better things

Me too, I'm not foaming at the lips for new hardware. I am well happy with my PS3 and Vita and there are still WAY more than enough games to keep me happy for another 2-3 years. Mainly because I don't hold on to the hope that better tech will somehow wipe away the malaise that the industry seems to have. Next gen you're gonna get exactly the same kind of games, just with better physics and graphics. These things don't constitute a solid gaming experience imo, and I'm glad that I have a content outlook on my gaming.
I'll be watching with interest what comes up, but I'll keep on with what i have until this gen doesn't have what I want, then I'll roll on to next and reap the savings of not being an early adopter.

I think the man is right. This is the longest gaming generation and it's really showing. The PC is blazing out of view of the consoles and what they're capable of. It's been nearly a year since I've sat down and played the PS3 or 360 on my own.

Square?
Lets try HD Towns before we request new hardware
Some devs are like kids, they want their pudding but won't eat their dinner.
Devs need to step up their game and start releasing worthy titles for this gen, too long my ass, R* only released 1 GTA
It would be a shitty gen if it ended soon

I still have a couple games that I'm eager to get my hands on and play before moving onto the PlayStation 4. Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, The Last of Us, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Sleeping Dogs etc.
Square Enix aren't exactly in the best position to criticize 'the big three' for a longer generation of video games though when they themselves seem lax on managing the dozen or so titles they've announced in the past 6 years. This is the same company that had the balls to tease another sequel to Final Fantasy XIII when they could be using that time and manpower to help Tetsuya Nomura and his team wrap up work on Final Fantasy Versus XIII. No sight of Kingdom Hearts III either.
They just took advantage of the whole 10-year console life-cycle from Sony and now that people are upset with the way they've handled themselves, they echo what Epic Games and Crytek have been saying, as if the arrival of the next generation will give them a clean slate.
Team Ico hasn't even released The Last Guardian. Can you imagine what it would be like for them if next-gen consoles came out tomorrow?Last edited by Blacksite; 07-12-2012 at 06:39.

It might be time for new consoles but i'm still more than happy with my PS3, 360, and even the Wii.
I just have so many games to play still. If you go to work, have responsibilities, have some sort or social life and actually play through your games and appreciate them i don't know how you couldn't have plenty of food left on your plate this generation.
I think this gen has been the perfect length and hope every generation lasts this long here on out.

I fully agree with this. There are 30 games (some out, some out soon and some next year) that I still plan on getting from this gen. That's a game a month for the next two and a half years lol. Between work, life and other hobbies, im fucked lol. Also, when Guild Wars 2 hits...I'm WELL sort'd!

Im ready for a new Wii. So i'll be getting the Wii U (as long as it launches in black) however not ready for a PS4.
I still play with the Wii really only when i have company over or with my gf other times im playing with the PS3 until they come out for a GT5 for PS4 ill stick with the PS3. Based on comments made by sony executives it sounds like PS4 is going to be expensive anyways.
