just thinking of making a new gaming desktop and im just wondering what's the best parts to choose from nowdays
and if it's a good idea to build one now or wait a bit
as of the motherboard i'd go with Gigabyte.
the proccessor im not sure of yet, maybe i7 or better
and i'd go with an ATI Graphic card, but the rest i didn't think of as for right now im still in the early stages of making my list etc

Personally I think this is a great reference. Various builds for various budgets that you can loosely follow! For the CPU you may want to take emulation software like Dolphin into consideration (ie. overclocking to run Xenoblade Chronicles in HD)

I wouldn't necessarily recommend Intel I quite love AMD for the applications and needs I have. Cheaper, and performs really well for me.

Depends on the budget.
CPU I'd recommend a i5 2500k Sandy Bridge. Good bang for the buck.
Not entirely sure but I've heard the i7 has no advantages over the i5 when it comes to gaming.
GPU idk how good you wanna go. At the very least a 6950.
Try asking /g/ you'll get more and faster responses.Last edited by Shibby; 07-11-2012 at 04:18.

As others have stated, we need know what your willing to spend.
I have a Intel I5 2500k with a cooler master CPU cooler and it runs great and cool and a EVGA 570 graphics card as well.
700W PSU
Gigabyte motherboard(Fantastic)
120GB SSD for OS and a 1TB HDD for storage/steam.
Windows 7 Ultimate which I got for fee.

The image I posted has different builds based off various budgets. (all intel based) But knowing you budget would still be nice to give more specific advice!

ATI is what i want.
Edit: sorry was in a hurry earlier
anyways, budget doesn't matter as i wanna know which are the best parts to buy these days for a gaming desktop
as for the proccessor tbh i like intel and not sure about which is better between the i7 and the i5
Graphic card i'd go with ati (maybe 6870 1gb or better)
along with 8 or 16gb of ram, gigabyte mobo, and a good heatsink
also thinking of getting the NZXT Phantom Full tower case (unless i find a better one i like)Last edited by The Cage; 07-11-2012 at 19:29.

I usually go for the Falcon Guide when I want some help on deciding on what to get as well as to help others.

In terms of raw power they are good its just the drivers let them down mostly with OpenGL games Quakes CS 1.6, half life, Brink and so on. But also the cotnrol panel is garbage there are things I want it to do that it cannot do but can be done in Nvidia control panel.
This is not me being fanboy this is me delivering real advice based on my time using an ATI 5770 and an AMD 6870.Last edited by keefy; 07-11-2012 at 17:46.

if budget isn't an issue and you're looking for the best parts, the 6000 series is outdated already go 7000. Buddy of mine has a 6950 2gb and there's already a few games out there he can't run at ultra max settings (if that's what you want to do, which i'd assume it is).
a 6870 1gb costs in the mid 100s now and you can get a 7850 2gb in the mid 200s.Last edited by Shibby; 07-11-2012 at 21:22.

^ Truth. It's better to spend half that and get the best hardware you can, then build an entirely new rig with the other half a few years later. You've stretched your money out over a longer period and still max everything with zero issue. I never will understand why people spend so much on a PC for gaming purposes.

Edited last post. Accidentally wrote 2 6970s when it's 2 7970s lol. Just that much more ridiculous.
I think 1 7970 is supposed to be the similar performance as crossfired 6950s.
By the time you would "need" to crossfire a card like that you can just buy a second one for pennies on the dollar if not just buy one new card regardless.
Just get a case with the biggest fans you can find lol. I think mid size is good enough not really necessary to go for the biggest.
Wish I had money to build one
. PC gamer at heart stuck in a console gamers body lol.

Case wise i like my coolermaster Silencio 550 its only cost me £60 its sleek no fancy lights or windows.
They now do a version with slightly better cooling, extra vents on top its a bit more money.
Silencio 650
Also about the same price range is the Antec P280 looks great but was a tad out of my price range at the time.

There's no need to go for Sli, I'm running 3x 1080p 3D monitors on a single GTX680 2GB and I can run every game at max settings... except for Shogun 2 Total War's campaign map and Metro 2033 with DOF enabled. I'm able to hit at least ~80fps on most modern games with ease and that's on a low-mid end AMD CPU (Phenom II 965BE). Save your money or get one of these:
- http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...14&subcat=2255
For Shogun 2, Metro 2033, and perhaps even the games coming out next year you'll want a 4GB card and not 2GB. And before you say anything 2x 2GB cards != 4GB, it equals the same as 2GB.
Also the 1000W PSU is overkill, I'm running on a Seasonic X-650W Silent and I haven't even come close to hitting its maximum wattage yet, and I connect a lot of stuff to this PC.

Just getting things up and running with the GTX670. Yeah, an O/C GTX680 is the way to go and tempting, just a little pricey right now. I might swap the GTX670 into the HTPC I am building from my (now) old gaming PC and go with an O/C GTX680.
The power supply was on sale, is modular with a really good bunch of long cables for routing underneath the mobo. It was only $160 and it will be ready for another GTX680 that way. My experience with the past three PC builds spread over several years is the graphics card can be upgraded two to three times in about two years span before the PC isn't worth upgrading any more. This justifies it for me, although in two years, the PC goes from being worth a couple thousand to maybe a couple hundred. This build seems like it can be upgraded for at least two years or more.
