Video after the linkThe $99 Android-based console Ouya has taken toKickstarterwith an astounding launch, netting over a quarter million dollars of its $950,000 goal in only a few hours. As of writing this, the total comes to $331,653 with 29 days to go before the deadline on 9th August.Ostensibly the greatest appeal of the console is its open design that includes a development kit, allowing anyone to make a game then upload it onto the marketplace."Every OUYA console is a dev kit. No need to purchase a license or an expensive SDK. It's built on Android, so developers already know how it works," explained the Kickstarter. It added, "That doesn't mean OUYA is an Android port.""OUYA could change AAA game development, too. Forget about licensing fees, retail fees, and publishing fees.""You can create the next big title in your bedroom - just like the good old days! Who needs pants!?"The one stipulation is that all games must include some free gameplay. This could range from a demo to a full game that operates on microtransactions. The developers set their own prices."At least some gameplay has to be free. We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe."As previously reported, One Laptop Per Child designer Yves Behar is on board designing the controller. Its layout is similar to that of the Xbox 360 pad with dual analogue sticks, face buttons, triggers, and a d-pad.Furthermore, there will be a touchpad, "for any games making the trek from mobile or tablet to the TV."It's too early to tell exactly what sort of content will be on Ouya, but founder Julie Uhrman promises Minecraft and Twitch.TV will be on there.Several big names have given their support for the project including Jenova Chen (Journey), Brian Fargo (founder of inXile), Jordan Mechner (Prince of Persia), Mojang (Minecraft), Adam Saltsman (Canabalt) and David Edery (Triple Town).Ouya's hardware specs consist of the following:
- Tegra3 quad-core processor
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB of internal flash storage
- HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
- WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
- Bluetooth LE 4.0
- USB 2.0 (one)
- Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
- Android 4.0
For more information, check out the video below.
If they can reach their goal, and the probably will, i wouldn't mind buying one of these. The idea seems really good

This is going to be interesting? Alot of great things can come from this or we can have another 3do fiasco (lots of promise but at the end disappointment)

The Ouya team has had a very big day. The company launched their Kickstarter at 6:00AM PST, and by 2:00PM had completed their funding (which, at $950,000 was an uncommonly high Kickstarter goal).
By 5:00PM the Ouya had sold out of consoles, meaning all the consoles Ouya intended they could possibly have imagined selling by the end of their 30 days of funding. No problem for Ouya though, more have already been added.
So what does Julie Uhrman, Ouya CEO and ex-IGNer think of all the backing? "We are completely blown away by the level of support we are receiving for OUYA." She says. "It's an amazing experience, to bring a concept to market and have the public rally behind it. We wanted to change things with OUYA, now thanks to the support of our Kickstarter funders, we can make that happen. O-U-Y-A."
So with this much money and pressure has Ouya started the long days required to get these units in their backers hands? Well, not yet. As one Ouya employee put it, "We have had a totally unproductive a day. We can't stop hitting refresh!"
Ouya has 29 days left, in which time we may very well see it become the largest funded Kickstarter of all time, leaving even the Pebble Watch ($10,266,845) in its wake.

What I like about it the most is how it is helping 'bedroom' developers. This could honestly be the start of something big and for the price I'm happy to say ill be buying one day 1 even if only for streaming apps. This thing has tones of potential!
BBK. Tapatalking.
EDIT: It has now doubled it's target. Sitting on a pretty $2.3 million. The gamers have spoke! I have a feeling these little boxes will be selling out very quickly. I'm actually very excited thoughLast edited by BoyBettaKnow; 07-11-2012 at 10:29.

This "box" could possibly create a new section exclusively for indie developers, maybe bringing great games to home consoles.

Sitting at $3.9 million now, I bet it'll break $4 million by the end of the day.
Just goes to show that there is a market for this thing. Hopefully they can increase the specifications seeing as it wont be available to March. Things are looking good for it thoughI Like Games.

Its started to slow down now so my guess would be that it makes around 8 or 9 million. I'll be surprised if it reaches over 12 million.
I agree, it should depend how large the games will be but for media and other applications i suppose a 32GB storage amount wouldn't be a bad idea. Mind you, memory is quite cheap currently. USB sticks should be enough for storage for meI Like Games.
