New job listings reveal that Rare may be working on a game for the next-generation Xbox as well as a free-to-play project. Posts for multiple positions contain interesting requirements that point to interesting aspects of Rare’s future.
In a listing for a principal rendering engineer, one section notes that candidates must “understand, assess and be capable of implementing real-time rendering techniques made possible by DirectX 11.” As Kotaku points out, the current-generation Xbox doesn’t support DirectX11, but the feature is heavily rumored to be included in Xbox 720.
A separate listing for a principal producer notes that “Experience around delivering and running online services or Free-to-play experiences would be a distinct advantage.” Microsoft has been rumored to be exploring free-to-play on consoles since last year, but a true free-to-play game has yet to arrive on Xbox.
It’s not clear if these projects are separate or if the listings are for the same game, but either way they provide an interesting look into what Rare is working on next.
The developer was acquired by Microsoft in 2002 and most recently released Kinect Sports and Kinect Sports: Season Two, along with classic titles Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie on Xbox Live. Earlier in the Xbox 360’s life, Rare developed two Viva Pinata games and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts in addition to famously creating the console’s avatars.
