Can someone explain the advertising rule to me?

I posted a link to a metrocast promotional deal in a thread and got a warning or told about advertising. Here is my question.

So, if say a member finds a good deal on video games or a video game system. That member posts a link to gamestop or a gaming company running a promotional deal. Or it could be someone finds a good deal on video games on amazon and ebay and posts a link.

Can someone tell me what is the difference between that scenario and what I did? I'm just confused.

Surely the product/service on offer is moot when the rule is specifically about driving traffic to another site?

That means driving traffic to other sites as competition. If it literally means giving others links to other sites to visit, then we can't post links to damn near anything else.
