the usual reply is to recommend them to buy what ever the majority of there friends use. but that's just a cop out as they are asking you, so.....
it plays 3D movies and Blu-ray, has a big enough catalogue of games to keep anyone happy and multi-player is free.
is there really any reason at all to not recommend the PS3. i can only think of one and that's just my choice of preferring 360 pad over PS3's.

If the person is an online mp oriented person then I would reccomend the 360 for its better online features and service. If the person is more SP oriented and only plays online from time to time then I would reccomend the PS3.

Honestly, I'd recommend the PS3, mainly because I don't have one and really wish I did so I could play with all the forumites.

It really depends on what kind of games you and your friends like playing. Although the most recent game I've played on the PlayStation 3 was Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, I'm convinced Sony offers a larger variety of exclusives. I haven't used my Xbox 360 since Gears of War 2 came out.

I'd tell 'em to get a 360 for these games, and a PS3 for these games... then a Vita for these games. lol They'd be in a worse case than before. hehe

Considering when this generation started I didn't know a single other person who had a PS3 (They all had 360s)...now I don't know a single person who owns a 360. They all switched to PS3s when they got fed up with the RROD.
Trophy-licious!

I'd recommend a PS3 over anything else, a PS2 overall. I dont care if a service has the better multiplayer, or interface, if it doesnt have a good line up of exclusives then its meaningless to me.

I doubt the average gamer in the real world gives a crap about who has the most exclusives. 90 percent of the games that come out PS3 or 360 are 3rd party games anyway. I really dont think 360 gamers in real life are sitting around their consoles all bummed out saying gee I wish we had more first party games. lol They just play the games that appeal to them regardless of the publishers name on the back. Plenty of good games on both consoles. As for me personally yeah I would like to see MS come up with at least a couple of more IPs.

Id ask will they do alot of multiplayer? do they like alot of awesome games? what do there friends have?
then id recomend a dreamcast.
Or if im being super serial, id recomend a 360 if there huge MP fans, but if there mostly SP with a bit of MP id go for PS3

My girlfriend asked me this same question the other week, she was like
I wanna get a console so I can watch movies and play a few games"
I replied, "oh sweet do you want a PS3 or an Xbox?"
She said "I don't care whatever you think"
"Well, the PS3 plays Blu Rays and the Xbox doesn't"
"What the hell why not its been out for ages, I'll get a PS3 then, and I liked that LittleBigPeople game so I can just borrow that and heaps of others from you!
"
Y_Y
But yeah, thought I'd share that scenario lol. Blu Ray does seem to be a big factor for some people, but most of the time when I do get aksed, I ask them right back "Well, what do you want to play?" And then assess them from the games alone, then get into features and stuff

If you're really, really low on cash and you want to play video games: PS2(Enormous library of great games to choose from)
If you can afford to spend a few Benjamin's then: PS3(Plays Blu-ray disks, 3D, Great library of games, free online to name a few).

I'd reccomend a PC best of the PS3 and the Xbox 360 plus generally speaking better graphics.
