Can someone please explain the difference between a casual, core and hardcore gamers? I'm really confused with respect these terms. It seems that that they are used differently by different people.
By the way, it seems like genres are being made up to make some lists appear to be bigger than others.

lol...what the heck is that? There are those types of games on both consoles. Well, maybe not the FPS MMO but for the other ones for sure.
Make your own level/game= Trials/Trials Evolution.....and the game Condemned is a basically a psychological thriller /horror game. So is Rise of nightmares,Left for Dead, Dead Rising, Alan Wake, and Metro 2033.

I think we can put the "variety" one to bed.
Just as long as everyone understands "variety" doesn't equal quantity. Nobody is aruging that Sony doesnt have more retail exlcusives.

So no one here can explain what casual, core and hardcore gamers are? I find that a bit odd since they are terms used quite a bit here.
How can you all use terms that you don't know the meanings of?I don't need no stinkin' signature!

I thought I had.
Hardcore/core gamers are interchangable.
It just means someone who likes to game a lot, for extended periods of time.
A casual gamer is someone who games for short periods of time, or infrequantly.
I consider the 6 hours straight I put into Dragon Age 2 on sunday night, makes me a core gamer (and tired).
I consider my wife who can tplay a game fo rmore then 30 mins, a casual gamer.
Like casual sex, its about the lack of comitment to the cause......

Thank you for the explanation! So because I play pretty much all games except for RPG's but may only play for 2 hours at a time, I'm a casual gamer? LOL! I thought it had something to do with types of games one played.
I play games like Bioshock, Uncharted, Assassins Creed but I'm considered a casual gamer because I don't don't put hours on end into playing. That's pretty odd IMO.Last edited by Old Man Gamer; 07-25-2012 at 01:54.

Depends, do you go back and play the game again?
If your playing 2 hours of a game and then moving onto the next without ever returning to it, then yes you are casual.
If you are simply playing games 2 hours at a time, then no, thats about what I generally can do as well.
I dont consider 2 hours a short period of time. 30 mins maybe.
I always find that indicative of how well I like a game.
If I'm going.."wait thats the fucking time? I need to got to bed!", then I know I'm hooked.

It's a shame there is no standard meaning for core and casual games lol. I've always seen it as core being those who play games as hobbyists/enthusiasts and casual for those who don't give a fuck about games generally but like to have a lil play now and then cause its fun. Casual games are generally dip shit simple because they are designed for people who bring out the console for maybe an hour or few at a time and don't really have the desire to invest the time it takes to get good at the game. This is why Demon's Soul is considered one of the most hardcore (aka core) games around. One does not simply play DS for 30 minutes and have an enjoyable experience lol. That game takes a lot of time to learn and master. Any game that has complex gameplay mechanics that would take a gamer awhile to pick up is consiered a core game. Core gamers generally don't like these casual experiences because they don't offer any challenge and are generally shitty games compared to the type of games they normally play. Well, that's just my take on it.

The PS3 is all about the exclusives. Uncharted, Infamous, God of War, Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Motorstorm. The show goes on. You'd need a notebook and a week of free time to list every great PS3 exclusive and give them the proper praise.
The 360? You've got Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza and exclusive Call of Duty DLC for a month or two.. Sounds like fun.
