Should I look at getting a BS degree in Dental Hygiene?

I've been wondering about it. I know I haven't even gotten the associate's degree yet, but I like to make plans for the future. An associate's degree is a 2 year degree, so it's not that much far away.

Now I am taking it one step at a time and focusing on my associate's degree, but I'm just wondering.

The cons about getting a BS in Dental Hygiene is:

    1. No increase in pay. As long as you're working in the office with a dentist, your salary average does not change.

    2. Finances. I would have to get a loan to get a BS in it. That would put me in debt for about $50,000. The yearly average salary for a Dental hygienist is $40,000 - $50,000.

The pros about getting a BS:

    1. Job security. If the requirements change someday or go up to requiring or prefering a BS degree, I won't have to go back to college.

    2. Resume. It would look good on my resume and make me more competitive in getting jobs or positions.

    3. More versatility. I would be able to do more than just work in dentist's office with a BS.

I know this is planning far ahead, so I'm being careful not to get ahead of myself. I know and I am focusing on the associate's degree, but I'm just wondering. Planning just comes natural to me.

Does anyone have any feedback or suggestions for other things I need to consider?

With the amount dentists charge I'm surprised more people don't try for it. Plus the relatively easy schedule.

But do you think the BS is worth it or do you think I should just stick to the associate's degree?

Here's just some food for thought:

A BS degree also opens the door to apply for a graduate or doctorate program. I know very little about your field, so I don't know what kind of opportunities you can get with an advanced degree. Even if you don't wanna go the dentist route, you can still apply to other graduate programs that have nothing to do with your BS.

Planning ahead for stuff like this is not a bad thing, especially when you talk about taking out loans. Honestly, I think I'd take the BS. You never know how handy that might be in the future.

I agree, I think having the BS will at least open other avenues for you.
