The slimmer slim hasn't been officially announced and these prices are just speculation. For all we know, those slimmer slim photos could have been photoshopped NASNI photos (it is interesting how similar NASNI and the leaked super slim look):

Seriously both MS and Sony need to go down this route to get some people on board. About fucking time.

I guess we didn't know how lucky we had it when the Dreamcast & GameCube launched at $199 now we have consoles that have been out going on 7 years & still $199 is the retail price for the cheapest Xbox 360 & PS3 will finally go below that price if the rumor is true. SMH
these consoles are 6 & 7 years old & they are still around the price of the Dreamcast & GameCube the day they came out & they have sold over 6X the DC & over 2X the GC without ever going below their launch prices lol.
Some people nevel hooked their PS3/Xbox/Wii to the internet so 16GB is ok for people who just want the console & if they fill that up they can get a Harddrive. & if they are not going to use more than 16GB why should they have to pay for a harddrive they are not going to get much use out of? so the 16GB model is a good option.Last edited by ONQ; 07-20-2012 at 03:01.

I agree. I know game installs are pretty bad on some games but this is a model for casual gamers that lets be honest....won't have a lot of game to install. And as they do they can delete old game installs or like you said..purchase a bigger hd. Those that are heavy psn gamers and the likes will upgrade the hd and sony knows that. They are trying to make the cheapest console they can and still make a profit. People act like they can just sell a PS3 at $149 and make a profit....I would like to see how that would be possible given the tech in the machine. Also, you do realize retailers have to have make money too. We don't know what Sony sells these consoles to them at but I promise is not $179....probably 15-20% less given what electronic retail margins are. They know those buying this console are going to be casual gamers....new gamers...and those that are looking for an extra ps3....and so it while they will gain console sells IDK if they are going to muster tons more software to make up for any lost money on hardware. They still have to make money on this if they are going to follow their new business model (vita for instance). $179 is a sweet price and likely we will see a 360 price drop as well. Remember this is a 10 year lifecycle and they have 3 to 4 more years to go for this machine and they have to leave room for more price cuts. There is a curve to these things....they aren't going to just jump down the curve and miss more revenue.

Problem is that they're trying to take over PC market share (which they did, a good amount) and by doing so they're trying to give us high tech but also higher price...they're forgetting that the reason why people like consoles are because they're fun and cheap, not because they should be high tech.
They need to find that balance...and I think Nintendo did a good job showing them that it's not about power only...though it helps of course.

Sufi you should know better
consoles wasn't made for cheap way to play games, they WAS the way to play games
PC's just inherited the option do so as games became more popular and to most its still that, a option
There is millions of people who own a games console and a high end PC that has only ever seen Facebook games because most people just don't see it a games machine, yeah you can hook it up to ya HDTV and get joypad, but you can do that with ya phone too
None of consoles were cheap, the Atari wasn't cheap, neither was any that came after it
Games have actually DROPPED in price, I remember Earthworm Jim being £60
That compared to £40 is a big difference
Anyway what I'm trying to say is gaming has never been cheap and if ya liked imports back in the day, well I think UK gamers remember the prices of them lol

That may very well be. But it didn't start out for $600 and sell at a loss now did it? Sony was also ok with taking a loss on hardware and making it up in software. Now with Microsoft outselling them they don't have the market share to do that anymore. It isn't a viable business option anymore. Sony as a company has been hurting for some time and they have decided that they will not release hardware and take losses. Look at the vita. The thing could easily be $50-$75 cheaper but they are not going to sell at cost. $149 might sell a crap load of consoles but it isn't going to make Sony any money. The late adopters will not be buying enough software to offset these loses. They are trying to move consoles to make money...deepen an install base and reach those 150 million ps2 owners at a similar price. They have 4 or 5 more years for more price cuts and you will see it eventually $149 and $129 and $99. There is a demand curve for the console over all price points and they are going to continue to maximize revenue. And again....if retail is $149 that means Sony is selling it to retailers for $120-125. Do you think they can make the PS3 and sell it that cheap?

It's pretty crazy when you say it like that. I really thought they could have squeezed the price down a bit more - but they must be okay with the way PS3 is selling at the moment, and this new slim will give it a little boost until they do hit that 149 price point. Would be interesting if they dropped the PS3 and PSV price at the same time

I'm betting that they can drop the price down further but it won't happen until big brother comes out to play aka PS4.
I think it's a smart move. Sales are already down YOY for everyone.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the 16GB and put in a larger HDD? I don't need 250GB but a 100GB would be nice.
I don't need no stinkin' signature!

If you're not after 250gb then yeah I suppose it would be cheaper

I see your point but I think they will need to really bring out things that are made for both casuals and hardcores...they can't just rely on hardcore users to sell their consoles anymore...especially since the price is too high for mainstream (for today's standards where a lot more profits can/should be made).

Nobody saying anything but that is a huge leak, considering even the existence of a super slim SKU was pure rumor just a few days ago. That has to be a higher level Sony memo, so it can't be that many people that got it. Jack Trent at past E3 has responded to these kind of leaks with some hurt, part humorous and part real, will be interesting to see House present it, since these 3 super slim SKU's had to be a major part of their Gamescom keynote.
