Now with Microsoft outselling them they don't have the market share to do that anymore. It isn't a viable business option anymore. Sony as a company has been hurting for some time and they have decided that they will not release hardware and take losses. Look at the vita. The thing could easily be $50-$75 cheaper but they are not going to sell at cost. $149 might sell a crap load of consoles but it isn't going to make Sony any money. The late adopters will not be buying enough software to offset these loses. They are trying to move consoles to make money...deepen an install base and reach those 150 million ps2 owners at a similar price. They have 4 or 5 more years for more price cuts and you will see it eventually $149 and $129 and $99. There is a demand curve for the console over all price points and they are going to continue to maximize revenue. And again....if retail is $149 that means Sony is selling it to retailers for $120-125. Do you think they can make the PS3 and sell it that cheap?
Even with the release of the PS3 Slim, Sony was losing roughly $30-$50 So how did they manage to stay afloat and why is the Playstation division the most profitable for them?. Software sales and PSN together have easily brushed those loses aside. In order to make money, you need to spend money. A cheaper PS3 will pull a massive consumer wave but Sony needs to be smart about that, they need to convince consumers that they have the best console out there at an affordable price. Those new PS3 owners will without a doubt invest in software(This work's on Sony's favor since they have a massive lineup of first party games) along with content from PSN. This will definitely help them out in the long run.

Jack Trent at past E3 has responded to these kind of leaks with some hurt, part humorous and part real, will be interesting to see House present it, since these 3 super slim SKU's had to be a major part of their Gamescom keynote.
No one is saying anything because that was already posted with the leaked pictures of the PS3 super slim. (well that's why I didn't say anything )

This also puts the PS3 back in the arena for being a very inexpensive and high quality blu ray player.

Thats tru and intially was my reasoning for getting a PS3. But i would imagine at this point sony has to be making a small profit on this console by now.

They announced they were profiting off the hardware last year (I think when they introduced the 2500 series), which is how they could afford to cut it to $249.

Back in mid 2010 i believe Sony was then "breaking even with a small profit" on the PS3

    here's a story i found: http://www.gamepolitics.com/2010/06/...t-ps3-hardware

if they release a super slim it obviously is going to have to cost less to make and they should be making a profit off the back on those models building captial towards the release of the PS4

they clearly are making money off the PS3 now. I see no way they are not going to make money off this new slimmer model. If they get it down to 149-179 that is truely remarkable! TBH I didn't realize that harddrives were so expensive for Sony. Clearly they have offered so many different scus due to getting the best deal on various harddrive sizes. If this new flash drive is that much cheaper I think it would do Sony well to be offered when the PS4 launches. One with just a flash drive and another with say 250gb hd.

If the 16GB is $179.99 then count me in. I don't have a PS3 anymore so one at $179.99 would be awesome considering I have a 250GB HDD sitting in an external enclosure doing nothing. If the 16GB, $179.99 comes with an empty HDD slot then that's amazing.

At least $130 I'd think, unless they strip it of more features like wifi.
