A shame. Hopefully they catch his partner soon, but his partner will prob kill himself(a good idea save the BS courts). This guy killed a 3month old. He wont last a month in jail with out getting his ass beaten, unless they hid him from the general public, which they will prob do.

The part where he said there's a bomb in his apartment. I wonder if he deliberately admitted to that so he can get lesser time (DOUBTFUL). I hope every criminal defense lawyer has a conscience and tells this guy to go fuck himself.

12 deaths, and 38 attempted murders.. this guy is a defense attorney's nightmare. Especially with the level of premeditation he showed.

This. And I don't know how they'll justify this. Pleading he's insane case? Not with this apparent background in Neuroscience. It may shorten his time, but I still think it won't change the life sentences or death penalty (if they have that in that state) he's gonna get. I hope he doesn't get protective custody.

Those lawyers are there to protect the people. You could be blamed for a crime that everyone thinks is obvious, but you didn't do it. Wouldn't you want to be guaranteed a lawyer?

That's not what I meant. When we know it's the guy then why defend him?

You know that's not what I meant (if you didn't I apologise). But my mind's not changing on the matter - I'm simply saying when everyone (WITNESSES, FOOTAGE, COPS ETC) else knows it's the guy, and when the "suspect" themselves aren't denying it/admitting to it - then why defend him?

I know what you mean. The guy has everything against him, it's not a case in which they think he did it but that he actually committed the crime with multiple eye witnesses experiencing the hell that night; his apartment being booby trapped and that he has not tried to claim innocence. Let's not forget the purchase record of the guns used in the theater shooting.

One disturbing thing I read was that he was trying to impersonate the Joker?. I'm not sure how accurate that is but the article paints a brilliant young man with a guaranteed future. Just what the hell happened?.

Yes this is what I mean.

Of course things that involve plenty of doubt and that do not include many (or) witnesses (heck even a lack of denial and/or a confession!) should get a lawyer.

But cases like this or the many others in the States over the past 2-6 years; as well as the Anders Brevik case in Norway; then why bother?

It will just drag it out and be a painful process for the victims' families.

And sometimes, may work in favour of the criminal by having a trial to showcase and grandstand their ideals (see Brevik's case).

It would have probably been next to impossible to even locate the shooter with everything that was going on and in a dark tear gas/smoke filled room. The lights likely were not on for most/all of the shooting and the movie still playing(flashing lights, loud noise, etc.). Also at some point the water sprinklers starting going off(I don't know if this was after all the shooting was done or not).

It was probably a scene pretty much out of a horror movie with flashing lights, loud noises, screaming, etc. At the same time the limited visibility may have saved a few people from death and/or physical injury.

The thing that got to me was when I read that some of them thought the smoke and gunfire was part of the movie...and now this guy painting his hair red and saying he's The Joker...wtf..

Very true.

According to the people that survived, he just walked in popped the tear gas, then waited for it to take effect, put one bullet in the air, and started shooting people that tried to run away.
