This is crazy!

So a while back I made a thread stating I didn't get into my current CC's Dental Hygiene program. I missed out on the 2012 class.

Almost every year or two years, they make changes to the program. Guess what the changes are for 2013, the class in which I reapply to the program? Other than make the program even more competitive with the point system, an APPLE IPAD IS REQUIRED!

That's right, you read that correctly. If you get admitted to the program in 2013 and beyond, you absolutely MUST purchase an Ipad. It has something to do with the new technology, but why an Ipad? Why can't I just use my pc?

So Fall 2013, the bookstore will be selling Ipads. That's going to be one awesome bookstore!

On top of buying a $500 Ipad, I have to pay for other things.

It makes me wonder what technology changes are in store for other academic majors. Pretty soon, we'll stop using paper completely.

On the bright side, I get to own an Ipad!

Makes sense. There's probably an app that you guys will play around with. An app that maps a patients mouth and you have to pretend you're the dental hygienist who is cleaning/check-up. At least you don't have to buy a Macbook Pro...

Anything to bleed your students dry, I guess.

Not really sure how paying 500 dollars to "play around with an app" makes "a lot of sense" though. And I doubt that we'll stop using paper completely. I know we've talked about this before but you'll want to back up your records and whatnot any way you can, even if the method seems outdated.

Then why is she required to buy an iPad and not stick with what she has? Her course is partly practical and it wouldn't surprise me if there are practical apps that they'll have to practice with. Makes sense

Why did you omit the first part of my post?

Besides, you don't need to sign up for classes if you want to buy an overpriced Apple product. I agree with the general consensus that it's crazy.

I'd hate to need to buy an ipad on top of any other books for classes for a semester. I believe at my university the med students get free iphones once they get into the program.

As for renting one, I hadn't thought of that. However, it's a two year program so it might be cheaper in the long run just to buy it.

If you're going to download a variety of Apps to help you in your courses, won't owning a phone be sufficient?. I've always seen tablets as inconvenient.

I guess Tablets can be "seen" as a learning device and Phone are typically seen as a distraction in a classroom setting.

That seems a bit silly, I'm all for technology being included in schools...but shouldn't the schools not purchase them and rent them out or include the cost in tuition prices.

This. Had I done my research when I started college, I wouldn't have bought that Macbook Pro. It's just a lot more convenient to do my homework at home and since my PC is fried and the parts can't be ordered for some reason (lol) this will have to do.

Well a laptop/computer is needed for my course...but that's pretty much a given. I do Computer Animation.

Which is why I upgraded mine to high end for my birthday.

It's a ten page document. Scroll down to the very last page, page 10.

Beginning the fall 2012, all students who are accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program will be required to purchase an I Pad for use in both clinical and lecture settings.
We will be using MacPractice software in the clinic in which students will be charting patients on their I Pads. In the classroom, we will be using e books instead of hard copies. An I Phone is not acceptable.
You can purchase an I Pad on your own or you can purchase one through the bookstore using grant or scholarship monies. Most I Pads will cost in the range of $500-$600 so please add this to your cost list when figuring in expenses.
