    2012 Summer Olympic Games Thread

Can't believe nobody created a thread for this yet. Shame!

I love the olympics... so let's talk about it here.

Go Team USA!!!! Go Team Jamaica!!!

    By Theft
I am stunned that some people appear to love their Playstation(1,2,3) or Xbox(360) more than I love the Denver Broncos.
    Trust me, it's sad

Eh, Olympics are not a big deal for me. I'll watch diving cus i went to high school with one of the competitors, and i'll watch some o the track events, but beyond that i couldn't care. The Olympics to me are supposed to represent cultural exchange, but its just really just watching people compete in sports i don't care about. I've never learned much about other nations and culture watching the olympics. If they had like "German hour" or "South Africa hour" inbetween events, i'd watch cus i could lean about histories, governments, and cultures, otherwise i don't care.

Couldn't you just learn that by watching the travel channel or doing a few Google searches? The Olympics have always been about sports since their inception.

I could yes thats true. but you can say the olypics are about sports but its not just that. It represents globalization, it represents the tearing down of transportation and communication barriers. You have heads of state participating in some fashion big names. the activity is sport, but there is symbolism and meaning beyond that. To me, it fails to draw attention to this meaning. It falls short by just conducting the events without providing context or meaning.

That's actually what I think it tries too hard to do and fails because some nations compete against each and it's a little ironic given that they're all there, united. But I guess that's what the UN is for. Take for example the Israeli debate whether they should have stood in silence for the Munich games since it's their 40th anniversary. One guy said that the opening ceremony is no place for that, and I completely agree (oh I have a feeling I'll get a lot of heat for this one). That ceremony is there to celebrate the games and all the nations that are participating, not horrific tragedy.

    Just my 0.02.

That's a fair assessment, but to me, it like a great lost opportunity. It could stand for more, but it doesn't.

Let's hope they don't make anymore mistakes with flags. Unbelievable that they had mixed up North & South Korea's flags! Anyway, go Teams USA, Germany & Japan & Guyana!

Womens Football - GBR v Brazil 19:45 Tuesday

Should be a good match I watched Brazil game today and they have nice close give n go passing and loads of skill but their long balls suck, constantly way too much pace on them.
    http://www.london2012.com/football/e...e06/index.html

BBC coverage is great there are about 30 channels dedicated to every sport imaginable I watched allsorts of sports today. Fencing looks like good fun.
