New IPs for all demographics. They have the right idea and in an age when everyone complains about sequels, it's refreshing.News: Sony’s Fergal Gara has been explaining why Sony continues to release brand new IP like Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls well into the lifespan of the PlayStation 3 instead of saving them for a new console.

It’s widely accepted that a successor to the PlayStation 3 is getting closer and closer, but that hasn’t stopped Sony continuing to invest in new IP for the present console, as The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls prove. Fergal Gara, Sony Computer Entertainment‘s UK MD, has been explaining why the company continues to push new franchises out this far into the console’s lifespan.
“When you launch a new IP it doesn’t have to be when you’ve got a brand new console. We’ve got to keep the new IP going,” Gara says. “For me, what’s most impressive about the new IP… has been the diversity of it, the fact that it’s appealing to different consumer groups, radically different consumer groups. Take Beyond and Book of Spells, they could hardly be farther apart.”
“New IP is the lifeblood of the industry and I don’t think that is limited to a current generation cycle anyway. It’s not a conversation I’ve had but I don’t see any immediate reason why, just like Gran Turismo, you don’t go from platform to platform and keep on going,” he said in an interview with MCV.
“What we presented at E3 makes the best of our broad strength – handheld, console, motion gaming– it’s a really interesting hybrid of all the bits coming together so that’s exciting and that’s what we should do as a format holder.”
“We want to be and we are dedicated to being a broad church,” Gara asserted. “That’s what we are and that’s particularly important being fairly well on in the life cycle of the home consoles – embracing both your core audience and the people who can still come into that.”PSU GHOST SYNDICATE - DUST 514 Media HUB - Podcast - BLOG (Soon™)

I don't think it is that paramount... *cough Nintendo. Microsoft doesn't need to take note lol.

I think they should replace the word 'new' with 'good'. Just because something is new doesn't make it good. I'm fine with sequels as long as each sequel improves over the last and keeps the series fresh.
I Like Games.

Whenever people say that a company doesn't have to do something because it is managing to sell as it is, it smells of complacency to me. I see it purely from a customer service point of view. Don't we as customers who invested in their product not deserve to be getting a continually growing and innovative experience on their console? Or are people content enough to be happy with the minimum the company HAS to do to get the masses. It's the minimalist approach that has deterred me from Nintendo's and MS's consoles.
It may be smart from a business viewpoint, and people can make all the financial arguments that they want, but I put games into my console, not balance sheets. In my opinion a company's strategy reflects their opinion of their customers, whether they hold them in high regard or not. Are MS's and Nintendo's customers not worth the investment of new, fresh IP by them?
I guess they are lucky that people are content with the minimalist approach. I never have been, it's one bigggg fucking turn off for me. That's why I've been on PlayStation for so long...
SCE is seemingly poorer than MS and does worse in sales, yet they are the ones going all out to bring fresh life to their platform even at the cusp of the next generation of consoles. The underdog always fights the hardest.

I play the games I like whether they are new IP's, sequels, or spin-offs from the regular game. There are multiple consoles available, so I buy them to enjoy different IP's. I don't have to only own a single console. I enjoy the exclusives from all three branches in the gaming tree.

The way I see it most 360 only owners in the real world really dont care as there is a constant flow of awesome 3rd party games (most of which are better on 360 anyway) along with their fix of Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable. Halo and Gears still sell like mad and Forza has one of the most dedicated online communities I've ever seen so obviously these IPs are still being enjoyed by many. And those who aren't 360 only owners have the best of both worlds so theyre not worried about it either. For me personally some of my favorite games this gen are 3rd party games. And since I play alot of them having the better version of most of those games plus getting expansions like Dawnguard first is a bigger advantage than having a few more exclusives. Some of which dont even appeal to me. Would I like to see MS put out a couple of more IPs? Sure I would. Am I worried about it or enjoying my 360 less because of it? Not by a long shot. PS3 has a certain exclusives that I love and I use it for that. But theres also a fair number of them that I just dont care for tbh which is why list wars dont impress me. The majority of my gaming is on the 360 mostly due to better 3rd party, getting certain DLC first and that I do still enjoy my Halo, Gears and Forza games. And with MS opening new studios I'm sure we'll most likely see some new IPs added when 720 launches or even a ressurection of some existing ones that MS has been sitting on. Anyway this of course is just my opinion and perspective.

Yep, I love new IPs, I'd totally be disappointed if ND had come out and announced Uncharted 4 for PS3, time to move on. I'm a tad disappointed they announced GOW:A too but we have only had one GOW for PS3 so its not TOO bad.Glad Sly is making his return this year and hope someone picks up Jak IV for next year or a MediEvil game for PS3/Vita, these are the games they need to bring back make sequels for.
