Yes, you can try and break away from the norms and that's totally understandable. However, you seem to be the type of person that would set up a dictatorship in your own four walls, which wouldn't benefit the children at all.

What you intend is counterproductive at best. Not allowing them to visit any school will raise them as anti-social outcasts.
yea, it does sound a little Amish.

Its the way these shows are that piss me of. They act like if you go orange and fuck all round you and disrespect your parents and believe that you can get what you want. Its all lies and yet millions of teens believe its real life and fall into the trap of naivety

I would, because I would raise them with enough sense to know reality and TV shows are very different. I laugh at some people on here though, they say I wont let them do this or that or this or that. I've witnessed that behavior so many times and the outcome is the same, the kid grows up and never talks to the parents anymore. LOL

True, but you do not need tv for that to happen. Just saying to teens and world war 3 breaks out lol

I'd let them watch because everything you see on MTV is what your going to see if they were in school. If it was my kid personally they would know by the time they are teenagers what is real and entertainment . If they want to watch it that fine as long as they understand its ONLY entertainment.

I will be home-schooling them. Fuck the public and private school systems.
By decling them any sort of social activity you deem unfit or tv, then more chance of them rebeling and becoming worse off then if you had just let them watch tv, kids/teens do not like being forced to do what parents tell them.

It would teach them respect, love, loyalty, honesty and accept all as equals. Letting them watch crap like MTV, throws all that out the window

I won't restrict my children because I wasn't as a child. I'll just guide them and help them understand that 95% of it is bullshit and don't feed into the hype. Just like with video games. I'll allow them to play GTA 40, but I'll teach them the difference between virtual and real life.

IMO MTV sucks these days. I loved the days of the original VJ's and I'm not even sure that they should even call it MTV any more.

To answer your question, it all depends on the kid. Pre-teen, no. Teenager, it comes down to individual maturity level and whether or not we, as parents, could discuss the events of the show with them and why they are good or bad and the consequences of their actions.

There has to be limits put in place for your children or they will do whatever they want anyway. Teaching is the best solution. If they don't learn what is expected of them, they won't be responsible adults.

Rebelling comes from not being allowed to do things that are not approved. Teaching kids that "x" is not proper, etc., basically the proper upbringing, will keep them from rebelling. Kids that are being taught how to do things right won't have reasons to do rebel against their parents. Rewards for the kids when they are doing things right, including not doing things they are told not to do, also helps.

Fuck me I'm glad you're not my dad.

On the school issue, how do you expect them to cope with college/university when they would never have had the social experiences that come with school ?

As a father of two kids I can tell you that is the worst thing you can do. Kids that are sheltered and controlled eventually break out in a bad way.

Whether it be in high school or college, they will eventually cut loose from being cooped up and controlled all of their lives. Usually, when they break out, it isn't pretty.

Kids respond to being trusted and having some degree of control, not being controlled.

Damn man. At least offer dinner first.

Anyway, home schooling doesn't mean they are cut off socially. It's just that when it comes to their education, I won't be playing around and sending them to some place where they WILL be indoctrinated.

You know what, I actually agree with Morganator on home-schooling. It's a good alternative and basically my college professors told me what we learned was either not enough to prepare us (english COMM200 vs. high school english) or that it was bullshit what they were teaching us.

Thanks. My kids did very well in high school, with their education, their clubs and their athletics.

Now they are both in college and on the Dean's List I'm very proud of them. Sure they have made mistakes but that's part of growing up.

As long as they learn from them that's the important thing. Never letting a kid fail is a bad thing since they never know how to learn from their mistakes.

Thank you. I'm just trying to cut out the bullshit. I still want my kids to have a social life so letting them play in the neighborhood and letting them do the activities they want to expand their horizons explore will always be one of the things on top of my list. MTV, is just not one of those things I will allow until they can prove their maturity. I'm not sheltering them or being overbearing. They will still make mistakes. It's also that if they are taught enough, they will also learn that they have to take responsibility for everything they do and they are more likely to do so.

Yeah but public school makes you stronger, a fighter because you get to mix with some of the lowest class families in your area.
