I realize this thread is waaaaay old considering how long the game has been out, but i'm replaying DMC3 and it reminded me of this agonizing question i had from 4. What the fuck is with Nero?!?!
>>>>>SPOILERS<<<<<<
We know from Sanctus that the blood of Sparda was required to awaken the savior. So he has to be a decedent of Sparda some how. Considering his age, he has to be a grandson, meaning either Dante or Vergil is his father. Now who is it? My guess is Vergil! Here is my evidence. Vergil's katana, Yamato, was broken sometime before DMC4 and is held in Fortuna where the Sparda cult tries repair the sword to open the portal to the demon world. The instant Nero come in contact with the sword, it repairs itself and triggers his devil powers. He also says something to the effect of "from that moment on, a voice rang inside of me. It said POWER, give me more POWER."
This really acts as two pieces of evidence. firstly, it only makes sense that Yamato would would react to the son of Vergil. His bloodline reawakened the blade. secondly, the voice seems to be 100% like Vergil. He was always after power, and the voice could only be the representation of Vergil. This could also be Yamato itself showing its perfect compatibility with Vergil.
The only problem, is how to explain Nero's presence in Fortuna, but this can be explained by Vergil's personality as well. He was obsessed with Sparda and wanted his power. He would have known of the cult and would have visited Fortuna before the events of DMC3 seeking his power or more information. Vergil got him some Fortuna tail and a silver haired infant was born as a result of the coitus In fact, i would think that the library Arkham approaches Vergil would have to be in Fortuna. What other library would hold information on Sparda and why would Arkham know Vergil was searching for information on Sparda.
So what do you think. He has to be a decedent of Sparda, and Vergil just makes sense.

I think I've never thought about devil may cry this much before... But I do see what you mean.
Makes me wish we had a real sequel coming along soon... It's not like tr series needed a reboot-prequel hybrid with all of the series lore and unanswered questions!

And this is why I'm mad about that DMC abomination. Theres so much in the DMC universe I wish they'd expand on, Nero being one of them.

It's difficult to determine where Nero came from. There are various theories in regards to this but none have much basis to go by. Theories I know of are as followed.
Vergils son: As far as I know, both Dante and Vergil were 17-20 in this game but we don't know how many years Devil May Cry 4 takes place.
Vergil's reincarnation: Nero's arm could be a part of Vergil or Nero himself is the reincarnation of Vergil?
Sparda's reincarnation: The most believable theory but again no real basis to go by.

I think he is Vergil's son, i just have a gut feeling. I think DMC3 Dane and Vergil are 19 officially. So Sometime before the events of DMC3, Vergil visits fortuna to get information on Sparda, gets it on (perhaps with a prostitute or some other fortuna resident since Nero was an orphan we don't know.) So then 16-18 years later we get the events of DMC4. Just looking at Dante's age he looks like he could be 35-38ish. So just looking at how old he looks in DMC3 and DMC4 the timeline makes sense to me. Plus it would be great fanboy service if he is Vergil's son. Vergil really had a tragic story with the Nelo Angelo arc, so i find some comfort that he has some vestige of him left in this world via Nero. Plus if you take the "Mundus Vivendi" (Mundus Lives) sign during the Berial fight literally, its ripe for a Mundus-Nero smokin' sick showdown! Perfect next game for me: We learn of Nero's heritage, Mundus returns, Nero and Mundus GET IT ON! I like playing as Dante better, but i'm more intrigued by Nero's story right now.

Like I said on the second theory; we don't know how old Dante really is during the events of Devil May Cry 4. Unless we get confirmation from Capcom, we can't really say that it's his son.
I didn't know about the, Vivendi sign. When I first saw that, I thought that it was some sort of easter egg. But as far as we know, we most likely won't be seeing Nero's story any time soon or at all in future Devil May Cry games.
