I guess you guys are right about the resolution. I just rushed and imagined PS4 like a PC to be at 2015. D:

I was one of them. I haven't had any an HD TV until last year lol.

This. PS4 will almost have a mid-high range GPU in 2013, so it SHOULD have 1080p native resolution. Anything more will be utterly wasteful use of resources that could have gone to physics, AI, lighting, post process etc.

Also, adding post process Anti Aliasing is less expensive than rendering twice as many pixels, meaning:
    720p + AA =more likely
    1080p = less likely
    1080p + AA = very unlikely

if any game rocks supersample AA next gen then technically they're running higher than 1080p

1080p 60fps 4xAA is what i would like to see...it wont happen but i can dream
    it'll prolly be
    1080p 30fps 1xAA

I didn't even realize there was already a resolution higher than that. I'm sure the general public has the same mindset. So no. It's be stupid to have that. That's just wasted extra cost that a very small minority would benefit.

All hardware already supports higher resolutions, it doesn't cost a thing.

If games will use high resolutions or more than 30fps is completely dependant on developers.
It will be a nice thing for something like ps4 GUI and web browsing though.

Oh alright. Thanks for the clarification. I'm not a tech junkie, so when it comes to resolutions and tech specs, and things of that nature, it all goes right over my head

Yea, hardware can theoretically try and 'output' at higher or lower resolutions. It isn't a hardware specific feature that enables the targeting of that stuff..

What I thought this conversation was about, though, was what the targeted 'standard' was going to be for the next gen. Which I believe should firmly remain at 1080p 30-60fps.

I hope PS4 will support a little higher resolution just a little. We most see something specail or different in PS4. P:

most PC's rock 1920x1200 resolution, any higher then they go multiscreen....there is no difference between 1080p and 1200p+. PS4 can put out a higher resolution, but it wont.
also, the bigger you go, the uglier textures start to get. and the less developers can hide

This is certainly what I am hoping for. I think it is a little different this time around with what resolutions should be outputting at. When the ps3 was first released 1080p tvs were out on the market place, expensive, but still conceivable for people to have. From everything I've seen and read there are just a hand full of TVs with res above 1080 and are crazy expensive ( and ridiculously huge....). A 1080p picture with just a small amount of AA would look quite fantastic

Um no. 1080p is the norm now. There's no reason to backpedal with new tech, especially with the advent of 4K right around the corner. It will be 1080p at the very least.

i don't think we've seen concrete specs of the PS4
however, some games already run at 1080p 60fps on the ps3.

HDTV's only go as high as 1080p. there is no need to waste resources going any higher when the norm is 1080.

the higher the resolution, the less resources the console has to work with (lets put it that way)
for the PS3, this is bad. as its restricted by low RAM
PS4 should have enough RAM to run 1080p with every game.

    Not necessary..

With virtual texturing the memory allocated to textures doesn't have to be increased.
This is something that many games already use and a lot more will use in next generation.

    doesn't one engine support that?
    and subsequently, one game

actually, Quake uses it too right?
from my understanding though, texture LOD is identical regardless of distance. which means close up, textures look ugly.

I hope games start to use atleast 2K textures to begin with next gen.
Games like skyrim with 2K textures look so much better than console versions

Current gen consoles' capabilities are limited by hardware. If next-gen is properly executed, they will at least be able to match current gen PCs and have a good amount of eye-candy.
