If there's ever a 4K resolution game, I'm sure it'll be 2D or something not too graphic intensive such as an HD remaster.

1080p is first native resolution we have had with HDTV:s, so when game renders 1080p image, there is no scaling within TV and result is a crisp image. (HD-Ready/720p TV:s are often 1366×768 resulting scaling even with 720p source.)
So yes, expect most developers to aim for it.'no, no one in their sane mind uses OpenGL on PS3' - Repi

im aware of TV scaling

one of the reasons i've had a 'Full HD' TV from the start
hopefully, next gen i'll actually get to use it to its fullest potential
but as you say. 1080p will be a target. it wont be the standard.
will developers be capable of maintaining 1080p? 720p is the current target, and many 'big' games fall short.

Maybe some tech heads can clarify this but does rendering twice as many pixels (1080p) take the same amount of processing power as rendering the same amount of pixels at half the time (720p @60fps)?
Because I think 1080p should be a priority before 60fps, because a stable 30fps is VERY playableLast edited by itachi73378; 08-24-2012 at 14:12.

Yes and no.
In terms of drawing the screen, it would be the same amount of work.
Problem is that when going to 60fps you have to do all other work twice. (Actual gameplay, polygon rotations, animations, etc.)
It is also more efficient to render bigger screen. (small polygon are inefficient to render.)'no, no one in their sane mind uses OpenGL on PS3' - Repi

60fps is nice but TVs thesedays can do 120Hz so 120FPS will be what to aim for soon enough.

They will probably. But I'm really satisfied with the HD provided right now.

I dunno if I'd rather have less AA and more fps...

Well, Nvidia and AMD are really doing a great job creating low cost AA solutions. FXAA, although hated by the PC elitists, is an extremely popular technique that works, and only costs 1-2 fps drop max.
Nvidia's TXAA is the next big thing. Look at the new releases like Sleeping Dogs. They are pure eye candy runing on 7 year old hardware. Next gen should now focus on performance stability.

FXAA was developed by Timothy Lottes who works at Nvidia, but it's just a piece of code which can be used by everyone.
TXAA is 'new' multisample based AA from nvidia (Lottes & co.) and is not released to public and thus only on nvidia hardware when developers make adjustment on their code to use it.
MLAA developed by Intel can be used by everyone and AMD has it as option in their drivers.'no, no one in their sane mind uses OpenGL on PS3' - Repi

I dont think that the PS4 will support a resolution higher than 1080P. Maybe all of the PS4 games are going to be 1080P and run at 60 fps which is more likely than an ultra high resolution option.

PC games are running like 4x super sampling with virtually no jaggies. Next gen sure is exciting.

Higher resolution gets rid of jaggies too.
1080p requires less AA than 720p to look smooth.
I have always sacrificed jaggies for FPS, very few games I run with 4x or more AA, its usually only Source engine games or old games that new hardware runs easily.
This is what I was talkign about when I said causes text to be aliased and funky.
This is MLAA

Compare it to Normal.
