I don't know if the next console will be their last....there is still money to be made off console sales....consoles of themselves. Not just selling say a tv that can connect you or a pc that can connect you. That and there are soo many countries...not just the US and EU and Japan to sell in and have to get internet channels up to par. I mean countries like Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Mexico, Korea, and on and on and on. Sure the EU and US may POSSIBLY get the internet to the level of streaming games and so on in 10 years....but all those countries????? One thing the PS2 has taught us and Sony's worldwide sales of PS3 is that SONY is in markets WORLDWIDE. They are not going to ignore those customers. I think they will continue to market a console and build them until returns are so poor and the change is so vast that they stop. No reason you can't provide both services. Just like Digital games and physical games. Sure...eventually there will be no need....but just because the wealthiest nations POSSIBLY will have those capabilities...and even then to select people...doesn't mean the rest of the world will. I could be wrong but I'm sure they still were making discman's and cassette players until just recently if not still. I've been into stores that sell them still at least. Nothing wrong with multiple channels of delivering the gaming. If you can afford it...no console...but those without that capability...you purchase one. IDK....I just see total digital downloads so far off for a majority of the world it will be hard to give up that market completely. Gaikai may make up a majority of their division and sales someday sure...but I just don't see them going away from physical consoles and the profits they can make from selling them and the accessories and so on. I could be wrong.
One thing I think is interesting and please please someone can explain this or tell me if I'm wrong because I'm no expert but why have computers and processors and cell phones and etc. made such huge leaps in technology but the internet speeds....still so so so slow to keep up. Technology has far far outpaced infrastructure.....and perhaps when we excel past the need for that infrastructure we will see these non-consoles...but man..perhaps I live in no mans land america but internet speeds...only marginally have increased since I graduated school 10 years ago....no way its keeping up with the rest of technology. I know its on purpose...and we could increase it...but that doesn't change the fact that it hasn't basically...and thats why I think the need for console will still exist. If we get that advanced with speed and etc...why even need home computers. We just need a keyboard and monitor and no pc. Just the internet and some super mega computer to do and save all our work on and game on....see there is still money in consoles...and pcs...and the internet speeds....just aint cutting it.

It depends on the internet provider you decide to stick with as technology continues to evolve. I remember that just yesterday I was using DLS with up to 1gb connection speed and now I'm on Cable with over 20gb of speed. In half a decade or full, I might be using fiber optic internet from, Google which is said to be 100x faster then the average cable speed!(Or who knows, I might be using something even better by then?). Something I did noticed from Comcast is that while you get really fast internet with unlimited bandwidth, you'll end up sharing that bandwidth with others in your area that have Comcast as well. I might later change my internet to satisfy my future media needs and I'm sure that many will follow. Again, I did say that next gen consoles could continue physical media use in another decade or so before going fully digital. Sony probably has that timeline plan for Gaikai hence why I said that a next gen Playstation console could be their last, because they would only need that in the future of gaming.
Of course anything can happen down the road, video game streaming could potentially suck and gamers will seek different alternatives that are more convenient, plus developing countries, like you said, won't be able to keep up and they're just as an important market as the rest of us. Gaming changes every generation so we won't know what surprises await us.

What. A. Mess.
Radgamer has posted a topic which is about returning the Playstation to it's glory days, yet some posters would rather just derail the thread from the first post. If you want to talk about fanboy's and thrash that kind of stuff out, there's a section for it. If you want to comment on the content on PSU, there's a section for it.
I am closing this and I have invited Radgamer to repost it. If it get's derailed again there will be serious consequences for the users involved.
