The Last Guardian - It still lives

Sony Worldwide Studios bigwig Shuhei Yoshida has assured gamers that Team ICO is still busy beavering away on The Last Guardian, and more importantly, it’s still due out on PlayStation 3.

Chatting with Eurogamer at Gamescom this week, Yoshida-san said a lot of work is going into the title, though the developer has had to redo a fair chunk of work that had previously got the game up to a playable state.

“The team is still working on it very hard,” he said. “There are certain technical issues they’ve been working on. That’s the period of time when the game, looking from the outside, doesn’t seem to be making much progress. But internally there is a lot of work going into creating the title.”

The Last Guardian was originally unveiled at E3 2009 and has made sporadic trade appearances ever since. The project was dealt a bit of a blow late last year when creator Fumito Ueda left Sony to work on the game in a freelance capacity.

“We had the game playable,” added Yoshida. “At one point we felt that it would be produced for a certain time period. That was the time we prematurely talked about the launch window. But it turned out the technical issues are much harder to solve. So the engineering team had to go back and redo some of the work they had done.”

The Last Guardian’s lengthy development cycle has resulted in many commentators speculating the game may have in fact been moved to PlayStation 4.

However, this is not the case: “The game is developed on PS3,” Yoshida-san assured.

Well this is reassuring but doesn't it feel late to release the game this far into the PS3's lifecycle?. I'm not exactly sure how long it will be until the PS4 is released but this can easily become a PS4 title. Let's cross our fingers for a full game reveal on Tokyo Game Show and a possible launch window.

Fantastic news. And if destiny decrees that it release as the final exclusive to PS3, I couldn't think of a title more worthy of seeing this generation off.

It matters to me. Seeing as how, unless the PS4 is about $300 or less, it'll probably be a years before I finally get one. So I'd rather be able to play it when it first comes out lol

No it ain't, many PS2 games were in product for a long time, MGS3 released 2 years after it was announced and lets not for get FFXII
I Think people get worried because they are more in a rush to get this gen over with and believe its gonna end soon dispite all evidence pointing to it not with some major releases not arriving till late 2013/ 2014
Lets face it with how Kojima announces and releases games MGS5 would be released in the same time frame as MGS4 was on PS3, so why not move production to PS4? Same with this and Vs XIII and many other titles.

There's a four-year difference between their first two games and The Last Guardian was announced three years ago. So it's not really that long of a wait. But let's hope they have something to show at the Tokyo Game Show.

It may have been announced 3 years ago but they've been working on it since 2008. As far as I know, there has only been one video released in that time which isn't very encouraging. Its the 3rd qtr of 2012 and we still haven't seen any new gameplay or much of anything. I'm disappointed because I really was looking forward to it back in 2011. I'm starting to think that Team Ico doesn't even exsist anymore.

That is true, but overall Rockstar has delivered some good titles this gen. I don't know much about Agent but I think we will get that before Last Guardian.

I don't see how likely that is when Rockstar North are developing both GTA V and Agent. Team Ico only has to worry about one title.

Rockstar Games has multiple teams with hundreds of staff members working on multiple projects

Team Ico has a handfull of workers(27) that can only work on one game at a time. The project must of been too big for Sony to send in a group from Santa Monica to lend them a hand.

Well, Team Ico is probably farther in development with The Last Guardian than Rockstar North is with Agent. The lack of a second trailer for GTA V, at this point, likely means that we won't see the game until early next year. I know GTA IV had three trailers before we finally saw it release.

Agent only has a logo. Cool, right? It really benefits Sony more than anyone else because, at the end of the day, they were able to secure an exclusive. And yet they couldn't even bother with a teaser trailer.

We don't know much about either game right now. Don't forget Rockstar is made up of several studios so they can always just shift it to another. As far as that game goes, it may not even be exclusive anymore. I don't think they are having any issues like Team Ico is.

Don't care about GTAV/Rockstar, don't care about Tokyo Game show, don't care about PS3/PS4, don't care how many years it's been...as long as I do indeed get to play "The Last Guardian".
