http://rt.com/usa/news/texas-west-nile-virus-785/As West Nile Virus plagues the US in its worst outbreak since 2004, Texas has declared an emergency as it hosts 80 percent of the country’s infections.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings expressed concern over his state’s unusually high infection rate. More than 200 disease infections occurred in Dallas County. In Texas, there were 381 cases and 16 deaths related to West Nile Virus – more than half of which occurred in Dallas County, ABC News reports.
The mayor on Wednesday authorized the first aerial spraying of insecticide from planes in more than 45 years, in an attempt to battle the deadly insects. The spraying will cost the government’s emergency fund $500,000.
“The number of cases, the number of deaths are remarkable, and we need to sit up and take notice,” the mayor said.
The Dallas Co. Health and Human Services is warning residents to protect themselves against potentially infected mosquitos by wearing long sleeves, insect repellant and light clothing. Those aged 50 and older are at highest risk of infection, especially those with other health conditions such as cancer, diabetes and kidney disease.
There is no vaccine or cure for West Nile Virus. While less than one percent of infected persons develop a serious neurological illness from the disease, seriously infected victims of the virus often need hospital care.
“When you step outside of your door, you need to be armed up for battle,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, medical director of the Dallas Co. Health and Human Services.
Americans are in the midst of the most likely time to contract the virus. Most infections occur between June and September – and peak this month.
To date, the virus has spread to at least 43 US states, infecting people, birds and mosquitos.
The worst-plagued county plans to begin its aerial spraying as early as Thursday, with state officials hoping to bring an end to an epidemic that has left at least 26 people dead this year.

I don't get it. It's a virus, right? Just create some vaccines. If it were constantly evolving like the flu, I would understand.

Why is there no cure to the West Nile virus? Why can't a vaccine be made? I'll probably google it when I get a moment.

cancer can not be cured. Because cancer is in the body already. This nile viruse can have a cure. HIV is in a different league

Okay, here is a simple explanation. I'm making it simple because I know not everyone on this forum has taken classes like Biology, A&P, and Microbiology, which breaks it down into specifics.
So, the body has its own defense or immune system. Imagine the army (other white blood cells) and the patrol (the white blood cells infected by HIV). The army and the patrol or lookout work together, each with their own job or role. The patrol alerts the army and the army kicks down doors and shoots em up.
So, here comes Chuck Norris (HIV), he enters the body. Chuck Norris only likes certain cells and he needs those cells to make more round house kicking Chuck Norris. The men Chuck Norris likes happens to be patrol men.
So the patrol man is just walking along and all the sudden Chuck Norris jumps out of the bushes and into the patrol man. Chuck Norris posseses him. The other patrol men walk by him but he's not a bacteria or a foreign body, so they walk on past him. Suddenly, the patrol man bursts and more little Chuck Norris come out and possess the other patrol men. So the cycle repeats itself until the patrol men are a non factor.
With the patrol men under attack, the army has no alert in place. Therefore, Jet Li (other pathogens) can come in and start attacking other cells and the body.
That's why HIV doesn't kill you, it's Jet Li who takes you out.Awww! Little baby bunny! <3

You mean this isn't the Black Death all over again? Thank goodness....protect themselves against potentially infected mosquitos by wearing long sleeves, insect repellant and light clothing...
...aged 50 and older are at highest risk of infection...
...less than one percent of infected persons develop a serious neurological illness from the disease...
...occur between June and September...Last edited by Blacksite; 08-18-2012 at 19:38.

West Nile has been abundant in the United States since 1999 (first found in New York). While this a huge ordeal and I do live in a Zip Code that has tested positive for West Nile Virus, the chances of actually getting West Nile Virus are very slim. Only 20% of people who are bitten by the disease actually show any symptoms and 19% of those 20% only show symptoms like the flu or the common cold. 1% of those bitten end up with the severe case of West Nile which often involves Meningitis and a trip to the ICU for a few days. Unless you're over 50 (like the article states) or your immune system is currently compromised (by other diseases), the likelihood of you falling into that 1% is slim-to-none.
The AVERAGE age of those who have died in Texas since the disease first showed up is 79.

Doesn't matter how different they are, that wasn't the point. It was an extreme case to exaggerate my point, which is that "just create a vaccine" is an incredibly ignorant statement. Like it is some simple task or something. It also implies that they haven't been trying to do so.
