Is Cooking a skill or just following directions?

Also before you "mix and match" you need recipes. A cookbook is essentially a collection of recipes.

Cooking is a bit like chemistry. You need a good recipe, experience and practice to make a perfect dish.

Considering I've made some pretty decent dishes on my own, I'd say it's a lot of both. I can make a pizza that'll knock every one of yours' socks off... guaranteed. I'm still trying to perfect it but it's a meal I've had people willing to pay me for.

It's a skill for the most part, because even though I follow directions, it still comes out like crap lol. Breakfast is the only thing I'm good at lol. But even then, it's limited to eggs and pancakes from a mix and things of that nature lol.

I love to cook. Its one of the reasons I won my old lady over. Once you memorize the temps against the time/weight of beef,chicken or fish the rest just falls into place. Sauces,seasonings and sides come with experimentation..

Ironically though..as a dude I'm better in a kitchen than on a grill. I'm ashamed...don't rub it in.

Nothing to be ashamed of. My wife loves to do the grilling. I don't have a problem having less experience in that area.

For the most part, yes. I do the dough and sauce from scratch. I get pre-grated cheese and I get the toppings raw and cook them myself.

I would say 80% skill, 20% following directions. I could read directions on how to change my engine in my car dosent mean I can do it. There are simple dishes yes, but the more advance def take skills.
