Is Cooking a skill or just following directions?

Is cooking a skill or just following directions?

People tell me I'm a good cook, but all I'm really doing is following a recipe or directions. Is it making the recipes where the skill comes in?

By the way, I know a lot of you on PSU are men, so do we have any mean men cooks or chefs on this forum?

I think its a little bit of both lol. It's more of a hobby i got into. I'm good with chicken and pastas. I don't think I'm good but I've been told many times I cook well.

Its simple. Cooking with a book is following directions. Cooking without the book is a skill.

It's more of a skill once you start experimenting with different stuff and learning your own ways.

It starts out from a book or learning from someone else..however it fast becomes a skill as you add your own unique spin on recipes. Which is what I tend to do when I cook.

Yes, cooking is a skill. Although, like anything else; there are varying degrees.

I've recently become a big fan of home cooking, trying lots of different recipes etc. An interesting combination of stress and enjoyment, Lol.

Here's a little soup I made last year, really easy - but went down amazingly well. Cook good food and people are amazed, regardless of you knowing how easy it was.

It depends on what you are cooking. If you follow steps no, its not a skill

But you try something different and unique and then yes its a skill

I can say I have a unique skill of experimenting with BBQ sauce. I try all types of ingredients, mix them up and see if it's good. Some work, some don't. They mostly work, mostly.

World class chefs are only notable because they are the worlds best direction followers.

BUT WHERE DO THESE DIRECTIONS COME FROM??

Depends on what you are cooking, I doubt even with good instruction most people can cook like this:

The puff pastry, the piping on the potato cases and the carve pattern is incredible and takes training, skill and practice.

It is a skill is to be able to follow directions. This is why a lot of people read the books and only a few can actually cook.

I think knowing what to put in stuff as per directions isn't a skill. Knowing WHY you should use certain ingredients is skill.
Thanks to Kwesnoth for the sig!

Good cooks don't need a cook book. They mix and match different recipes to make something new.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.
