They should package the Vita with PS3 at $499. That way, Vita buyers will save $50 off of retail and Sony will also be moving a PS3 AND Vita unit at the same time for the $50 hit.

Why would it be dumb? It doesn't mean Sony has to sell every PS3 with a Vita from then on, they can still sell a PS3 by itself. It'll just be an option for those who don't have both consoles for a better price then buying them separately. Also if they could get the price tag to something similar to that of the Wii U's then Sony could say "We've also got a screen controller for the PS3, buy a PS3 instead of a Wii U as we've already got a massive catalog of PS3 games, got cross-play/cross buy games coming and you can take your "controller" away from the PS3 unlike the Wii U and continue playing the same game away from home. Not to mention all the exclusive Vita games"

That's like 3 systems in one when compared to the Wii U, as you got the PS3 games, PS3-Vita games, and the Vita games

There's pretty much no reason why Sony shouldn't Try to do this, as next-gen is closing in so most devs will switch to that. To support the PS3 beyond the PS4, Sony should set it up so its in competition with the Wii U. Sony can't create games exclusively for 3 different platforms, so with cross-buy/play this Sony is able to create games for the PS3/Vita and the PS4...
While those devs who want to create PS3 only games can still do so, those creating games for the Wii U can create games for the PS3/Vita allowing more people to buy the games..

Well it has to be done right and a lot more advertising then what Sony is use to, but if done correctly Sony should be able to move more PS3's/Vita's.. Would they be up to such enormous job to inform the avg person? To get support from 3rd partys? To still allow the Vita to have enough exclusives that it can still sell by itself? In have a nice price point to versus the WiiU?

Time shell tell.. Even if it fails, it won't harm Sony as they're still trying to sell PS3's and Vitas. All they got to do is make a bundle and create some games with 3rd party backing it.

This sounds like a decent idea. Package in one or two of the cross play games to start people off on both consoles, then they can go from there

Don't you think that if it were that great an idea that they would have done it already? There's a reason why Sony bundles games with consoles/handhelds, because they can afford to lose money on however much it costs to print games on discs, which they know they'll make up for in first party game sales and PS2 sales (which ridiculously, continue to sell well in some parts of the world). Bundling console with a handheld means they'll be losing whatever it costs to make the handheld, which, pretty much guaranteed won't be less than $60.

It would be a bad idea.

And it's not that the company doesn't care about you either. Or that they're greedy. Remember this is a company that could have made a **** ton of money if they charged you for online play, but they chose not to.

Then they could sell the PS3/Vita for the same price as you normally would but with a better bundle deal with games? This like you said, they're only really paying for the printing of the games then. This getting more people with Vita's/PS3 which will lead to more software sales for both platforms.

What would be really needed is the PS3 super slim so the price could hopefully match the Wii U's. Which is why we haven't seen the bundle already as it would cost to much with the current model.

I don't think the idea Kizaru, is to give it away for free, but to somehow work out a deal where if you pay more you get a good deal on both a PS3 and PSV

This might become something when the LBP2 patch goes live, for instance. A game would have to bring them together, since selling two pieces of hardware that aren't necessarily congruent yet would be a bit silly.

Long story short: the software has to bind the hardware before it can be bundled, or Sony will be wasting more time and money.

It could happen and bundle the cross-play game (PS All-Stars, R&C, LBP 2 etc) and try to get the jump on the Wii U. This would only even remotely work if Sony did some marketing, which isn't exactly their forte.

Bundle a console with a console? I'd like to see it happen but I'm not sure they'll go through with it.

I think that it's in order for a ~$375 PS3/Vita bundle given the existence of cross play games and the upcoming cross buy games. $400 with the Move bundled in.

But they did choose to go with proprietary memory cards for the Vita and then charge us up the ass for them.

Can't help but think if the Vita just supported micro-SD cards Sony may have shifted a lot more units. The negativity (let alone the price) surrounding the proprietery memory cards would surely have hurt overall sales
