Sony says that its latest console, the PlayStation Vita, topped 2.2 million units sold this summer. "The latest figures we've released for Vita (as of June 30th) are 2.2. million sales worldwide," an SCEE rep told us. We reached out following a report from PlayFront.de, where German PlayStation head Uwe Bassendowski mentioned the number in the context of the Vita's marketing.
The last update we had on Vita sales was back in May, when Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said the system sold 1.8 million units worldwide – meaning the console moved around 200K units each month in May and June. For some context, before the Nintendo 3DS received its price cut to $170 – and just days after its US launch – the then $250 handheld had sold 1.41 million units more than the Vita's current lifetime sales. As of September 2011 (one month after the price drop), the 3DS was at 6.68 million units sold worldwide – or more than triple where the Vita's selling at right now. "Yikes" is the word we'd use to describe that situation.
A strong showing of Vita games at Gamescom 2012 and the subsequent launch of said games will hopefully bolster the Vita's sales numbers. We sure aren't gonna see a price cut anytime soon.

Well, it could be worse.
I hope it picks up steam and ends up doing very well, its an awesome console. BUT yeah, its just about the games. My feeling is that its gonna be like the 3DS was in its first year, not much to play, I barely touched mine and now I can't put it down. ATM I love my Vita but I barely play it, the 8 games I own for it are the only ones that interest me until there are some new releases

Realistically the vita is never going to catch the 3ds in sales. Nintendo owns the console handheld market.
Hopefully sony can break even with the vita. A Ps3 and Vita bundle would be amazing!

That is true, but I think Sony don't get as much credit as they deserve, Nintendo has always owned the handheld market and no company has ever competed with them, the actual fact the the PSP is at 70+mil is very impressive but no one ever mentions it

150 million DS's were sold....idk how anyone can say the psp didn't sell it sold 70 million! Do you know what other handheld was the other to sell double digit in the millions before the PSP that's not a nintendo console?
Sega Gamegear with 10 million so PSP didn't fail just didn't sell as much as the DS....
I can honestly see the vita doing 30 million in a 4 to 5 year period in sales but it won't surpass the PSP.

They better start cutting some corners now then. If not, they'll be lucky to pass the Gamegear. Get the price down, memory card prices down or allow 3rd parties to sell them too, and get some more content out on a regular basis. THEN, and only then, will they be on the right track to catching the PSP.

Some advertising would be nice as well for the vita when psp came out I would see commercial atleast 2 times a day. There is only on TV ad I've seen for the vita.
I think in year two with a price drop Vita will get a second wind by that time they should be able to drop production cost as well.

I believe Nintendo is just going to OWN the holiday season this year. The 3ds XL is selling like hot cakes! LMAO Sorry need to really get their act together with the vita we got about a month or so before things start getting really interesting in the industry...

Hard to see why Nintendo can do so much vs Sony not being able to do it...
