via Eurogamer. As the PlayStation 4 looms ever larger on the horizon, Sony has said the ageing PlayStation 3 is in "prime time".
This November the PS3 will be six years old, and reports indicate next year Sony will release its successor, the PS4, into the wild.
That may be cause for some non-PS3 owners to feel it better to wait for the PS4. But according to Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida, there has never been a better time to jump in.
"PS3 is I think in prime time," he said. "It's a great time for consumers to look at purchasing PS3 this year. There are a variety of games coming out and new and exciting games coming out next year.
"At the same time the library of games we are able to offer at a very affordable price - we just announced the Essentials line in Europe. So, for the budget conscious consumer it's a perfect new platform to join this Christmas."
But what of those who already own a PS3? Yoshida pointed to Naughty Dog stunner The Last of Us and David Cage thriller Beyond as examples of the kind of games that prove Sony is prepared to invest in eye-catching PS3 exclusives even at this late stage in the console's life.
"For people who own PS3, rest assured new content is still coming," he said. "Games like Last of Us and Beyond look amazing compared to the early PS3 titles. There's still something surprising happening on the platform."
Typically, consoles sell most towards the end of their lifecycles when the price is at its lowest.
The PS3 super slim - perhaps the worst-kept secret in the industry - looks set for a Tokyo Game Show announcement, although Yoshida refused to be drawn on it when quizzed by Eurogamer. "That's a rumour," he said. "There are lots of different kinds of rumours on the internet."
We've heard that Sony will cut the price of the PS3 this year, but Yoshida said he was happy with the current price.
"We are very happy with where we are in terms of PS3: the services, games and the pricing included," Yoshida said. "So, there's no plan for any change we can talk about."

Most important part. TGS is still to come."We are very happy with where we are in terms of PS3: the services, games and the pricing included," Yoshida said. "So, there's no plan for any change we can talk about."

A price cut is always welcome but the price is good for the entertainment the system offers. Its a far cry from the 600+ I paid at launch.

The PS3 is in it's prime? That can be argued lol
I am 32yrs old, according to Sony, I am in my prime lol. (for those that do not know what age is considered "being in your prime", it would be 25yrs old.)Last edited by Lethal_NFS; 08-21-2012 at 19:37.

It's cheaper than ever and has a new model and price point rumored, is putting it's best content out in bargain bundles and has 5 new IPs in the works. I'd say things are looking reasonable healthy.

I'd say it's in it's prime, it's in that GoW2/MGS3/ZoE2/Okami phase equivalent of last gen where it's games are really shining now Sony's devs get the tech better.PSU GHOST SYNDICATE - DUST 514 Media HUB - Podcast - BLOG (Soon™)

July 2008: PlayStation 3 is "hitting its stride".
June 2011: PlayStation 3 is "only just now hitting its stride".
August 2012: PlayStation 3 is "in prime time".
That was one long stride, but we're finally there! Wooooooooooh!!!!!

I said 'I'm sure', as in I'm confident they will, never passed it on as fact.
It makes perfect business sense to try and pull away as much attention as possible from the competition, so yes, I'm pretty sure Sony will be doing it, and wouldn't be surprised if MS did something too.

Sony said they are happy with Vita sales too and always say theyre happy with PS3 sales even when they were talking about NPD numbers when they were getting curb stomped back in the day so this is just more PR to be taken with a huge grain of salt. If anything these kind of statements (like "prime time") kind of make me think PS4 will launch at least a year after the next Xbox.

Cmon bro when was the last time sony had any business sense? Lol
Never said u passed anything as fact I inquired what were you basing it on. If its business sense....then I wouldn't feel safe placing that bet lol
As I do agree with you it makes sense and rumors support it until it happens its just that rumors...
If sony was getting it right with the Vita I'd be more incline to believe it based on history of the video game industry I just don't see it happening which sucks cause I would like a new ps3 for my spare room in my house.

I agree but they may not have a choice or they might have to release a console that isnt as beefy as it would have been otherwise. Theyre in the midst of trying to regain profitability and already have a new platform (the Vita) on the market thats struggling. So if Sony is forced to launch alongside the next Xbox they most likely are going to try to minimize their PS4 investment and production costs as much as they can. Theyre already looking at ways of cutting production costs on the Vita. Time will tell I guess.

That's true if sony is going to give a year head start they better launch with a handful of AAA first party titles like GT6, new god of war ect... They can't stumble out the gates with PS4

Believe me people. Sony and MS say this stuff to HIDE stuff. Hide price drops, hide new releases, hide hide. It's all about timing, marketing, competition and strategy. NO PLAN is a scape goat. This way you can't say they lied.

That is debatable, I know ya thinking " what about this gen"
But it really does depend on what both companies being to the table
If MS goes cruising into nextgen with their guard down Sony can do last minute strategic changes, its also helps with pricing and expectations
Which before you say "but PS3" Sony was in their own world there
This time they know MS is a threat, and it would be foolish for MS to underestimate Sony
Same with Sony, if MS being their A game Sony better be ready to get that machine out the gate within 6 months, thats if MS releases before Sony
And Sony needs to make sure that through the whole time Nextbox is on the market on its own, that the PS4 is in always in the news, and I mean good news
People want to hear what are the benefits, they want to hear the press say" miss Nextbox, this is better", and most importantly they need to get in with the devs so that when MS calls they get a "sorry we are currently in talks with Sony"
Thou if they dont and just do what they did this gen, then yeah it will cost them dearly

usually everything sony says is the opposite of what they actually do. every time they have said "no price drop this year" there has always been a price drop. Everytime they said "we have an AWESOME announcement to make in two days" it wasn't awesome, it sucked. every time every time etc etc etc it goes on and on. This company says one thing and does another, it has this entire gen. so if Sony is now saying there isn't going to be a price cut, that is basically them saying there is going to be a price cut.
