Jack Andraka, 15, invents cancer test that is 168x faster, 26000x less expensive, and 400x more sensitive than the current standard. 3¢ and 5 minutes
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-19291258Fifteen-year-old high school student Jack Andraka likes to kayak and watch the US television show Glee.
And when time permits, he also likes to do advanced research in one of the most respected cancer laboratories in the world.
Jack Andraka has created a pancreatic cancer test that is 168 times faster and considerably cheaper than the gold standard in the field. He has applied for a patent for his test and is now carrying out further research at Johns Hopkins University in the US city of Baltimore.
And he did it by using Google.
The Maryland native, who won $75,000 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May for his creation, cites search engines and free online science papers as the tools that allowed him to create the test.
The BBC's Matt Danzico sat down with the teenager, who said the idea came to him when he was "chilling out in biology class".
That is really sick. I can't believe he invented that at only the age of 15. Reminds me how meanless my life is lol.
I agree with the guy on reddit though, once the businesses get their hands on this it's not even going to be close to 26000x cheaper, it'll probably be the same price as it is now.

This dude should patent or whatever he needs to do to protect his discovery right now! He's going to get screwed by the big corporations which of course will screw everyone else trying to get a test.

I like this kid. For instance he does what i do and research so much on the internet. It's unreal what you can do on it. You can look up anything and gain a new level of intelligence but i think the internet is ruined by major sites like facebook, games, porn and etc. There's nothing wrong with that but it's a distraction from becoming truly intelligent.

Umm..I listened to what he said, it just sounds like he stole an article off Google and e-mailed it to a bunch of people.
Trophy-licious!

Not surprising. This generation has the benefit of growing up and being familiar with technology. We're also 'used' to going with the flow of the rapid advancements.
So a kid at 15 using a search engine (like google) with some creative thinking to invent a faster test.. Not all that surprising to me imo. The internet is the greatest achievement of mankind.
Access to near infinite information in seconds. It's a game changer.
