Xbox 720 will have 'graphics like Avatar' - AMD

Microsoft's Xbox 360 successor will be capable of graphical detail level with James Cameron's movie Avatar, according to hardware giant AMD.
Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine US, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison wouldn't outright confirm the tech firm's working on the new Xbox, but did state that gamers 'have a lot to be excited about'.Robison claimed the A.I. and physics capabilities of the next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as Grand Theft Auto to have a 'totally individual mentality,' meaning no more mob mentality - 'every NPC will actually be an individual character'.
THQ boss Brian Farrell recently told investors he expects next-gen Microsoft and Sony consoles to be less centred on raw power and more focused on accessible services and user interfaces - "if there are consoles".
2K boss Christoph Hartmann recently claimed Microsoft and Sony are already "experimenting" with Kinect and Move for what could be the foundations of their next-generation console plans.

it'll be no where near as complex as avatar.

the AI and physics is easy to believe. but that first part is pure fantasy

Avatar is 3 years old which in computer industry is prehistoric, graphics hardware can come a long way in those 3 years. Many peopel are crying out for new generation xboxes after 6 years.

Video game consoles do not need the power to display Avatar type graphics that were needed to create the movie. There are many reasons why it took a server farm to make the movie. The 3D aspect being one of them. Games are not movies.

I would not be surprised to see Avatar type graphics next gen. And not all games run in real time.

If AMD says the graphics will be that good, then I believe they will. Why the hell would I doubt them?

because they're the ones saying it about themselves. why would they say anything to the contrary

"Next-gen" tech demos are good looking, but i wouldn't say they are avatar level. the amount of 'stuff' Avatar can put on screen at once cannot be done in real time.

really though, i only care about the animations.
its one of the things i continually rag on about with the UE3

The "next-gen will look like Avatar" comment isn't anything new. I would like to see the A.I. of NPCs and environmental interaction improve though.

If they did produce avatar type graphics expect to pay 600+ for a console and 100 per game.

Many people are calling out for new generation from all if the console manufacturers.

This is going to end up being the longest generation since the NES so it's no wonder why we all want new consoles.

As consumers we have become accustomed to a new console every five years.

Well even in the 3rd gen (nes era) in the states Nintendo had a limited release in 1985 then in 1986 a full blown launch by 1989 we already had next gen hardware from TurboGraphix and the Genesis in late 1989. Snes was released in 1991 so even then it was a 5 year turn around. This Gen has been longer than any in history without new consoles being released which I felt helped provide more quality software for all of us gamers no matter what system you may own.

If Ford came out and said their next Mustang will be a 9sec car for under $25,000, that would be an example. We would think "No way!". But obviously it could happen.
