Sony ushers in 4K later this year

Sony is bringing a 4K XBR line out by the end of the year. This adds a lot of credence to the rumor the PS4 will support 4K. It also pisses all over that stupid "spec" that was floating around, a consolized AMD 7900 GPU would choke on less than half that.

PlayStation 4 will support 4K resolution - report
Sony plans to launch an 80-inch LED TV with 4K resolution for the holidays

BGR exclusively reported early information pertaining to one of Sony’s biggest TV lineups in history — the XBR6, XBR7, and XBR8 — and now, a source close to Sony’s (SNY) manufacturing partners has given us details surrounding what could potentially be a category-changing television set from the Japanese vendor. According to our source, Sony is currently planning to introduce a flagship XBR LED TV that will be as large as 80-inches. While the size alone would be a big deal — it will be the largest XBR TV Sony has ever offered — we have been told that the real standout feature will be the display’s 4K resolution. The estimated retail price of Sony’s 80-inch XBR? Our source says it will be in the ballpark of $30,000, and we could see an introduction as soon as this coming holiday season. We’ll have more on Sony’s 4K plans soon.

4K isn't too far fetched, in fact might as well expect no less, afterall it'll only be for the XMB/pictures/movies etc.

Considering ps4 will have to last a decade, I can totally see 4k being the norm by 2022
I wonder when a nuclear warhead goes off, does the frame rate of real life drop?

Sony had to spearhead the way with 1080p and HDMI. Now, they are spearheading the way for 4K (means 4096 horizontal resolution but also applies to 3840x2160 16:9 aspect). The first 4K Quad-HDTV are going to be super expensive. The PS4 will support 4K but that won't be the baseline, just the capability to be a 4K source down the road. Sony's implementation is with two HDMI connectors so it isn't a giant leap into a risky technology. If the PS4 will be capable of supporting 4K video, then it bodes well for games to launch with a high framerate at 1080p.

Imagine watching a 1080p bluray on that screen it will look similar to how DVD does on 1080p screen.

6990 card is cable of 5760x1080 (eyfinity) Crysis 2 a around 40FPS according to some benchmarks.

That's where I see the problem. Unless those TVs have really good upscalers integrated into the system all current Blu Rays will look blurry because the pixels will be stretched to fill the screen.

Not at that price. This isn't going to be used for games remember, unless its a $1,000 console.

I'm talking about the PS4. If it has 4k support, it will just upscale 720p/1080p games to 4k.

You won't seen native 4K games till the PS5 at the earliest.

I misread your post. But the same will apply ti blu-ray movies since the likelihood of native 2k/4k movies on disc is very remote.

    no it wouldn't

sony was able to run GT5 in 4K 4 years ago with 4 PS3s connected together a AMD 7970 is a lot more powerful than 4 of the GPUs in the PS3.

As long as this becomes standard quicker than HD and 3D and they don't make some big deal about it and overcharge.
    Trophy-licious!

Sounds like it will be priced too high for many people to afford.

I've already read too many negative things about that. Maybe it'll be perfect in the decade it takes for the tv to be affordable.

Just a little bit lol. However, this is how it was with HD and 3D. You pay an arm and a leg at release and later it becomes realistically priced.
