What company has the MOST momentum heading into the next generation?

I don't think it matters much at all. People forget that Microsoft is mainly a software technology company and entered a industry dominated by Sony and Nintendo. It was a huge risk for them entering this sort of market. As a matter of fact, I remember many critics saying that the xbox brand would never be where they are today. It really doesn't matter if they are 2 million ahead or just 2 ahead. Just to be compared to a gaming giant like sony is enough momentum to build upon.

This is fair enough. MS did well moving into the industry.

I guess it depends on what you define as momentum though doesn't it, sales or output.

Well Ms haven't got anything announced past March, so yeah it'll be ready not long after, and it will likely have games...meanwhile the Ps4 will have to wait another 2-4 years for its first game from Naughty Dog...ya can't have it both ways...

Haha we didn't even know that ND split their teams and had TLOU in the works until it was announced and I doubt the team that was doing Uncharted 3 is now just working on the character skins and maps they've released so far...I doubt even more that we will wait 2-4 years I'd wager that Sony is bolstering their flagship studio for next gen.

We can have it both ways because Sony has the studio power to do it. What are Sucker Punch doing? What are GG doing? (highly doubt the whole team is working on KZ Vita).

Sony is a bigger publisher than MS. It doesn't have to stop making games for it's current gen consoles in order to funnel those meager resources into next gen titles.

I was trying to point out that saying "PS3 has lots of games coming out", has no bearing on "readiness" for next gen, quite the opposite.
While Sony may or may not be ready, ND, Japan, Santa Monica and Quantic Dreams clearly aren't.

Well, this remains to be seen. We won't know until gen 8 dawns. I don't really know how all of this is "clear" to you though, unless you have read articles I've missed, it's all speculation.

I would have to say Microsoft appears to have the most momentum. Xbox Live is an untamable beast that continues to grow, and it has a price tag. Most likely the best online service in the console market. If you have Xbox Live, you are ready to tackle nearly anything. The Xbox 360 continues to distance itself further and further in sales, and has the price advantage. Take that market saturation and brand recognition into the next console era, and you have a step up. When you look at Microsoft's overwhelming game library, and how it dwarfs the competitors, that will give consumers faith in the support that will be seen with the Xbox Next. With more and more new IP's and exclusives getting pumped out, it's a pleasing direction for the consumers.

Combine Xbox Next with Xbox Live, Windows 8, Windows Mobile, Smart Glass on iPod, iPad, Android and iPhones, Surface, cross platform compatibility, Kinect 2.0, Cloud Services, massive library of future games, ease of game development, and all the movie/music/media services, it looks like MS will be on a roll going forward.

On the same token, I think Sony will be on a roll as well, as noted by their products and services that Ghost already mentioned.

Any game that is announced as "PC" and confirmed to run DX11, you can bet will be looked as a game they can port.

Sony has all the momentum going into next generation. I think Microsoft has dropped the ball over the past few years. Ever since 2008 Sony has really been pumping out the exclusive games. Most gamers i know have gone back to Sony after playing the 360 the first few years this generation and are looking forward to the PS4 more than the 720. Sony will return to dominance next generation. If 2013 is any indication of what's to come we're going to be in gaming paradise next gen.

I think all companies have momentum for the next generation and I hope they all get support from the customers. I don´t want to see home consoles die and dissapear from the market.
The market and the customers need at least three big companies to choose from and competition is good for all. I only wish SEGA was still around.

Microsoft once again outsold the other consoles

Microsoft announced today prior to the NPD report for August that its Xbox 360 console has sold 193,000 units for the month, marking the 20th consecutive month as the top-selling current-generation console in the US.

Microsoft noted that Xbox 360 held 48 percent share of current-generation console sales, which is the 18th consecutive month that the system has held more than a 40 percent share of current-generation console sales in the US.

Additionally, total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in August (hardware, software and accessories) reached $196 million. Microsoft said that consumers spent more on Xbox 360 products in August than they spent on the other two current-generation consoles combined

MS are about 2 million a head of Sony and they were cheaper and came out first. What have they done with all this success? Media apps, kinect games and the same exclusives. Great momentum if you are an accountant.

I stand by my opinion, I much prfer Sony's momentum, namely the development of the industries best 1st party legion, cloud gaming technology and the Vita. Seems to promise a lot more in the future than a higher market share in the US.
