    Half-Life: Black Mesa Finally Releasing..FOR FREE !!!

    SOURCE

    Fans resurrect Half-Life video game

After eight years of work, fans are about to release an updated and expanded version of classic video game Half-Life.

Called Black Mesa, the resurrected game will be made available as a free download on 14 September.

The update has been put together using programming tools released by Half-Life creator Valve.

It will have improved graphics, better physics and environmental effects and a tweaked story line.

News about the long-awaited update broke at the weekend when a countdown timer appeared on the Black Mesa project webpage.

A forum message posted soon after revealed that eager players would not get an improved version of the entire game on 14 September.

Carlos Montero, leader of the 40-strong Black Mesa development team, said it decided to release a shorter version instead of making people wait longer for the whole thing.

Alien intrusion The large chunk of Half-Life that is finished lets players guide hero Gordon Freeman to a section of the original gameplay known as Lamda Core. Finishing this first chunk should take players between eight to 10 hours.

The final section yet to be finished takes place in the alien Xen dimension. An expanded Xen section would be released at an unnamed date in the future, said the team.

First person shooter Half-Life was released in 1998 and gave players the task of guiding government scientist Gordon Freeman through the Black Mesa research complex battling aliens and thwarting their attempt to invade Earth. The game has been hugely influential since its release.

Half-Life creator Valve released an updated version of the game in 2004 that was built around its Source game code or engine. That official update of Half-Life was generally regarded as unsatisfactory and led to the Black Mesa project which aimed to do a better job.

The project uses an updated version of Source which leads to improvements in physics, lighting and allows for far more subtlety in the facial expressions of characters.

The Black Mesa team has also edited the storyline to beef up the more engaging parts of the game and eliminate the slower parts.

Nice! I actually have not played HL1 yet even though I've play HL2. I guess I'll wait a little longer before I start.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

Already played through Half-Life: Source but this is free and it'll look better so why not? Although it should have all of the levels at this point.

The main man Carlos "Cman2k" Montero was involved in this FREE source mod www.hl2ctf.com It is good and well made, in the early years it was really popular due to Valve not having a CTF game mode for HL2 but when TF2 released alot of players switched over to that.

I loved HL1, better than 2 IMO (love both though).

The intro always sends shivers down my spine and now it is going to be in high-er rez. Strange aspect is there hasn't been that much change in basic weapons systems in almost 15 years, the Apache and the V-22 troop transport are still in use in real life, not much change in the hand weapons, the Black Mesa facility could easily be a relocated Area 51. Amazing these guys stuck it together this long.

Half-Life doesn't hold up very well today, believe me. That's why I'm so excited for this. Beat Half-Life over the summer and, while very fun at times, other parts were a mind-numbing chore.

The release of Black Mesa is a testament to what fans can accomplish. No doubt this will be the next big legendary release, like Counter-Strike 1.6, that goes down in history and ends up convincing Valve to hire some of these guys/girls.

Only 40% Yes on Greenlight for Black Mesa to be on Steam. All it takes is logging in and clicking on the Yes button.

I voted 'Yes' as well. Although I doubt it needs to be at 100 percent, given how many votes it would take to get something approved.

Going to be a pretty big download probably 3GB or more due to compression those with slow speeds might want to start downlaod the SDK base 2007 pretty soon so it is ready for release day.
To get the SDK base 2007 check the "Tools" section of steam.

    System Requirements
    Windows XP, Vista, or 7
6.9 GB of free hard drive space (not including *free* Source Sdk Base 2007, installed seperately)

I sent my vote for greenlight

Just read an article on Joystiq saying the game was coming to Steam.

Not very surprising, but yeah. Should be fun.

Yeah it made Greenlight approval. Kinda funny if you look at the approval chart, it starts out later than everybody else and zooms to the top.
