What game has been the "FFVII" of this generation?

What video game, in your opinion, has been the Final Fantasy VII of this generation? What game will influence the future of video games and sets a standard for games in the future and next generation? Was there any games like that in this generation in your view?

Three Games did it for me, one is a series of three games.

    1. Batman Arkham City
    2. LA Noire
    3. Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood, and Revelations

    Honorary Mentions:
    Uncharted 2

Currently Playing: Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (PS4) and Bravely Default (3DS)

    Hmm good question.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I haven't really had many of those "FF7" moments. I think the closes so far has been MGS4, Mass Effect 2 and 3 (before the ending).

I think the Uncharted series as a whole definitely did this as well.

I don't think I've played a game this gen at that level. I'm not necessarily saying they're not good just not at that level.

Batman Arkham City, Uncharted (entire series) are all up there. Metal Gear Solid 4 was epic though. It transcended generations of gaming.

Ok I have to ask. What is the big deal with FF7? I tried playing two FF games and absolutely could not stand it. I know FF7 was ambitious for the time but since I'm not a fan of the series I don't understand the obsession with FF7.

Focus. Control. Conviction. Resolve. A true ace lacks none of these attributes. Nothing can deter you from the task at hand except your own fears. This is your sky.

these are all phenomenal games but we won't accept them as ffvii equals until by 2025 because by then we'll feel nostalgic about this gen

MGS4: the fact that you're even given a chance to play the 'old' way enforces the notion of evolution. ie PS1 section on Shadow Moses.

romancing your nostalgia doesn't do much as it goes out the window when there is a direct comparison of how much better the game is this gen.
hyperbole doesn't do me any justice, i cant think of a game i rate so highly across any platform, or generation.

MGS4= top game ever! i don't see it being topped.

Uncharted 2 & Valkyria Chronicles would be somewhere around there also.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Jokes aside, I can't think of any games that would fit your description. I really enjoyed Uncharted 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution the most but I wouldn't say they accomplished as much as Final Fantasy VII did back then.

Well ... I'd say MGS4 for sure. Uncharted games got close, but not quite.

I've played many good games this gen, just no games that like "touches your heart" so to speak.

For many it was their first FF, first RPG, or first PlayStation game period. People hold it near and dear to their heart and overrate it without even giving it a second thought. Great game but a bit overrated in my opinion for the amount of mouth watering hype it receives. Like some people can't enjoy an FF game anymore because it's 'not as good as FFVII was' according to them.

To answer the OP. It would have to be Metal Gear Solid 4 or Uncharted 2 and 3 for me. Those weren't the 'FFVII' this generation for me. They were the FFVIII or FFX this gen for me. I liked those FF games more than FFVII.

No way! It isn't just nostalgia I think. FF7 is just a $#@!ing solid RPG. The story was epic, characters are all awesome, the world is expansive, the magic system is cool, the music is AMAZING and there are some of the coolest minigames in any RPG game (choco breeding for example). FF7 checked all the boxes. ;D

OT: nothing has come close imo.

FF7 was a good solid rpg. No denying that, but its still doesn't hold a candle to 6 (+3 in the us) IMHO.....

While I feel it was a great game, I still think it is hyped up more then it should be. Mainly as other stated, It being for many gamers their first FF or RPG in general swell as it being the first FF using 3d polygons and being on the best selling console ever definitely helped matters.
PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....

Hard decision considering I haven't played FFVII , but a series that will definitely have a special place in my "gamer" heart would have to be the ME series along with MGS4.

The only 2 games that come close to mind are Demon's Souls and Valkyria Chronicles.

^I kinda agree about Oblivion. I played it on PC for like easily 200 hours.

It was actually a very good game.

None really... but if I had to choose the closest would be Uncharted 2. Everyone was blown away by that game. I couldn't believe how good it was when it came out... those were good times.

Like others have said: none. But if I had to choose something with a gun to my head, I'd probably go with Red Dead Redemption. What a game.

Objectively, let's take a look at why FFVII was important.

FFVII was important because it brought a niche genre to the mainstream, broke video game barriers in terms of storytelling and scope, and ultimately defined a generation.

Is there a video game this generation that did that? Granted, this game didn't need to break the same kind of barriers, but just barriers in general.

Perhaps Mass Effect? The problem here is that there isn't one game in the trilogy that did it all right. The first Mass Effect broke ground, but it's not the best game in the trilogy and is very flawed (just like the other two games). The trilogy as whole would probably be the best choice though, as it definitely broke ground in terms of storytelling.

Perhaps Gears of War? This game broke ground in terms of visuals and more importantly, the cover-based gameplay mechanics were extremely influential on this generation.

Perhaps Metal Gear Solid 4? Whether you like it or not, this definitely brought video games closer to cinema than any other game.

Perhaps Uncharted 2? This game broke ground in terms of animation and achieving a blockbuster film feel. This and MGS4 are probably the PS3's two defining games.

Perhaps Call of Duty 4? First-person shooters are nothing new, but the overall formula this game used was imitated more than anything else this generation. This is definitely the defining game of the current generation, even though it's due to excellent refinement instead of strong innovation.

None of the aforementioned games brought a niche genre to the mainstream, so we can cross that out. If I had to choose one game, it would be COD4. It's the most popular and the most influential game of this generation, and even though it doesn't create the sense of attachement through storytelling, world, and music, like with Final Fantasy, it creates attachement through addicting multiplayer.
