It's for Wii backwards compatibility and Wii U games that are compatible with Wii Remotes.

But I'm just glad I $100 in gift cards to best buy. It's only gonna cost me $250! The funny thing is my wife had $100 gift card to Circuit City when the Wii launched and that's how I got mine at launch lol
