Xbox 360's first free-to-play MMO Happy Wars due next week

Happy Wars - the first free-to-play MMO on Xbox 360 - is due for release on 12th October for all Xbox LIVE Gold Members, developer Toylogic has announced. The 30 player strategy/action title pits two teams of up to 15 players against each other as they attempt to lay siege to enemy castles and defend their terrain. There will be an offline single-player campaign as well.

Players will be able to upgrade their character's equipment and gain new costumes either by using Happy Stars earned in battle or by purchasing Happy Tickets for the in-game item shop.
Toylogic previously had a hand in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and this looks to have similar sensibilities with its cartoony action and melee brawling. See it in action in the most recent gameplay video below.

If you have the dashboard beta, you have been able to play this for awhile now. It is pretty damn fun!

    I didn't like Dust 514, but I'd love Class 3/Class 4 to be F2P!

Not feeling this game yet I'm told it's fun even though it may appear weird from the YT vid.

How is it free to play? You still have the gold subscription fee....and it shouldn't have an extra charge for online play for those who are paying for gold subscription anyway....

Interesting that they are pointing it out as 'free'...not that it matters.

It's good that MS is joining the f2p wagon, but this game doesn't appeal to me. When I do get hold next, ill probably give it a go though, may as well

Looks interesting but what a terrible name. Also, since when did 15v15 qualify as MMO?

Reminds me of Fat Princess. Not really the kind of game that comes to mind when I see the letters MMO. Good to see every one at least trying the F2P thang.

I agree, I always had this mentality in regards to "free" games you get with PS+, and people claim the games are free too, yet you pay for PS+.

Yeah, I was wondering the same. It is not free if you have to pay for a gold subscription. Reminds me of the "free" games when you pay for PSN+.

As for MMO, I don't know the definition exactly, but this says:

    MMO
    1. (online gaming) A massively multiplayer online game. A computer game in which a large number of players can simultaneously interact in a persistent world.
    2. (colloquial) A massively multiplayer online role-playing game.

    http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/MMO
So no specific number is given, other than large, and it has to be in a persistent world.

A persistent world (PW) is a virtual world that continues to exist even after a user exits the world and that user-made changes to its state are, to some extent, permanent.[1][2] The term is frequently used in the definition of the massively multiplayer online video games and can be considered synonymous with that class of games,[3] including other narrativeforms of a media franchise.
Does this game qualify for all those?

    I was agreeing with sainraja.

F2P game that requires XBL Gold, that doesn't sound free.

Free games available to PS+ subscribers, that doesn't sound free.

Why, because you're paying for a sub.

Agreed. Free game/games is not an accurate description for either situation. Both Xbox Live Gold and PS+ cost money.

Looks interesting to me, sorta like Fat Princess on steroids. The fact that it's an MMO, makes it seem much more appealing. But I wouldn't pay for it...I've been spoiled by WoW...and even that game isn't worth the entire $15/mo.
Praise the lord! Next stop: Ni No Kuni.

To remove any doubt, it should be called a Gold subscription benefit. That seems reasonable.

Both MS and Sony chose not to do that because it eliminates the illusion.

People like to hear the term "free". These days the only thing that is still free is oxygen, at least it is at the moment.
