The English National Opera has caused a stir after it released a controversial ad promoting its new Don Giovanni production. Mozart’s opera is being advertized with a picture of a used condom packet.
The theatre said they wanted a smart and catchy ad-campaign for the opera.
“We came up with this idea which we think is brilliant, funny and captures the idea of Don Giovanni in a witty way,” The Evening Standard quotes a spokeswoman for ENO.
A billboard promoting the production depicts a used condom packet and the words: “Don Giovanni. Coming soon”.
The theatre’s website describes the production as a “riveting romp” following the last twenty-four hours of the legendary lothario’s life “as he lusts his way towards one last hot date with the fires of hell.”
On Twitter opinions regarding the ad campaign are split. Some call it witty, while others believe ENO has gone too far.
Jamie Henderson wrote: “ENO has mailed us something that resembles a giant condom packet to promote their Don Giovanni. Tackorama.”
“Is ENO's ad campaign really that bad? I think it's hilarious,” Suzi Jones wrote on Twitter.
User Paul Lay found the ad misleading: “This is an opera about rape. ENO loses the plot again. This time, literally.”
“It’s relatively amusing for a second but probably unnecessary and offensive to some,” Twitter user, Justin Smyth said.
Multi-award-winning director Rufus Norris is staging the production of Mozart’s opera.
ENO is known for its avant-garde productions of classical pieces. The upcoming Don Giovanni opera is a revised version of their 2010 production. Two years ago the opera caused an outcry for its bold erotic scenes. The 2010 version of Don Giovanni included a scene where a group of masked men wearing Jesus Christ t-shirts rape a woman.
