    Value for money....

Just wanted to point how uncompetitive Sony have become...

From my recent JB Hi-Fi catalog.

    PS3 12GB NBA Bundle
    12gb PS3+NBA2K3+Mod Nation Racers $384

    Xbox 360 250gb Bundle
    250gb Xbox360 + Fifa 13+Forza 4+Skyrim (via XBL)+1 month of gold. $398

I'm unsure if this is the world over.

But honestly..how could you convince someone to by this PS3 bundle....

    Open to suggestions...

Edit:Update Sony have just the bundle by$40..sanity prevails.

ITs cheaper to buy the 12GB console and then buy a seperate 500GB hard drive than it is to buy the 500GB SKU.

The xbox bundle offers more and is cheaper. Its more attractive as well. I think PS3 bundles must get improved in order to compete better with xbox.

Ability to play Bluray movies might be the decision maker there for some. It's the only thing the Xbox can't do. Some will see that as the added value.

yeah the 12GB PS3 in AUS is a flop. But I can see that it would appeal to more casual gamers. ie my girlfriend. But she is getting one mainly for Blu Ray and the odd games here and there so I think its value enough for her and justifiable.

I was working it on the 185 price of the 12GB PS3 but that makes it even more a kick in the face to consumers.

    Why buy this for 250?

Save 50 and buy the drive yourself.

    PS3 console 12GB (159)

    Plus

    500GB hard drive (40)

    OR

Buy a 1TB drive and save 25 and have double the storage.

Its almost too good/bad to be true

As a matter of fact I was thinking of the exact same thing a couple of days ago when I was looking at pricing over here. Sony will have a hard time going to the holidays like that. SuperSlim or not.

    SuperSlim PS3 12GB: 2299kr

    Slim 360 250GB +Forza 4+Skyrim+Fifa13 or MoH Warfighter or NFS MW: 2399kr
    ^^ That's a ~$10 difference.

And then there is also this:
    Slim 360 250GB + Forza 4 + Skyrim: 1848kr

when little johnny asks for xmas console, i'm guessing the 12gb system will suffice along with some games he may want as opposed to a console and game pack with games he may not want or even know about.

    PS3 12gb standalone $344
    Xbox360 4gb=$269

Little Johnny would be getting a 360 here in NZ.

Just an update the PS3 bundle has just dropped $40.
Maybe even Sony are realizing how uncompetitive that was.

Even with that reduction its not great, still get more with the 360. 2 very good games and FIFA plus alot more storage and a month of online play over the Christmas period.

I used to think the PS3 SHOULD be more expensive because of the built in Blu-ray drive. But now that the 360 has a more expensive portable HDD, has 5 USB ports (vs. the PS3's 2), a dedicated Kinect port, electric/touch disk drive, wireless N (vs. B/G), and also includes a headset.

So as far as hardware goes, it seems to be pretty dang close.

If you consider a mandatory install, then the PS3 12gb is equivilant to the 4gb in terms of realstic space left over on the drive.
The issue I have is blu-ray is simply not a feature, those who want it have it.
Those who dont, dont want it. Blu-ray is expensive (the disc) compare dto standard DVD. And even if you did want a BR player, they are like $99 these days.

Justifying the price difference on BR, is simply a non starter these days.

I think sony need to rethink the bundle, if it was say Uncharted trilogy, and maybe somthign else, then it would be a bit more value for money.
But basketball in NZ and Aus isnt that popular.

But you agree, a BD-ROM drive is more expensive than a DVD-ROM drive, right?

Plus you can get a stand alone BR player thats both cheaper and better than a PS3 as far as BR players go.

    Hardware cost wise?

No, not really. Maybe $10 differnece if that at manufactuere level.
The difference at reatail in NZ is roughly $30-$50.

Well its going to add $10 to a unit for sure.
Does it negate the fact that I can pick up a 32gb USB ultra for $40, and Sony are giving a 12gb, while MS are giving a 250gb hard drive on their model?
    No not at all.

At the end of the day if strip the storage and the blur-ray away from these machines its pretty obvious that the cost to manufacture a PS3 PCB is clearly still expensive to do.
And we know it aint the RSX, which leaves us with the Cell.
Yield levels clearly arent fantastic even after all this time.

I don't think the PS3 bundle is competitive but what you're saying here does not have weight.

Mandatory installs are rare nowadays and they're not that high anymore. I've never heard of an 8GB install anyway. Maybe you meant to say similar? Even then, it's a stretch.

    Based on what?

that's not cheap for a stand-alone. I know NZ dollar amount is usually higher but it seems it'd be twice the price of a DVD player.

Rare, come on they are not. And I'm assuming someone want at least 2 games to play.

Huh? I said the price difference is about $30-$50 at retail. Which is twice the price of DVD player.
Im referring to the player being $99, while the movies cost $40-$50 each.
DVD new releases wont set you much past $29 NZ.

Yeah the installs are a $#@! I agree that it doesn't leave much room at all, as I said, 12GB was a HORRIBLE choice.

On the defensive, Blu Ray disks in AUS at least, are these days from what I see only a few dollars more than DVD, and there are sooo many get 2 for $20 etc sales around.

And yeah, the games in the bundle are bad choices. But thats not a Sony bundle in a box thats just what JB HI FI have thrown together

I would just look at the exclusive catalog of games on offer for each console and the choice would be easy for me. Throw in the multiplats and the Blu-ray player and it's a given.

    PS3 all day.

If you looked at the exclusive catalog then 360 has more along with the better multiplats.

    Just saying..
