What was id Software doing between Doom 3 and Rage?

id software churned out Doom and Quake games in the 90s, but then they released Doom 3 in 2004 and Rage in 2011, and nothing in between. Were they using all that time to build id tech 5?

    Just curious.

They were working on Quake Live, some mobile (iOS) games and the id Tech 5 engine. I believe Doom 4 was also in the early stages of development whilst Rage was being worked on, too.

Fairly certain they were involved on some level with Wolfenstein (2009) and Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars.

Carmack was probably doing a hundred interesting things including that rocket project of his.

As for the rest of em, fuck knows.

From what I've gathered idTech5 isn't that fantastic imo. ID themselves made a game with... Well, "controversial" results (to put it politely) for its first outing.

Given the huge waves idTech4 made in the industry back in the day, I'd call it a flop by comparison.

Doom 4 is really their saving grace at this point imo.

Since Doom 4 will run at 30 FPS instead of 60 FPS, we should see more impressive stuff, such as much higher enemy counts. I believe Carmack said he wants 30 demons to be "crawling all over you" at once.

I also hope they resolve the pop-in, or at least make it so the textures load based on proximity instead of view.

They were sitting in the 90's. That was the problem

Speaking of Rage, the skybox in that game looks amazing.

Carmack was re-writing idtech4 throwing away most of its code and creating idtech5 if he had not have done that then maybe Rage would have been ready sooner.

Quake 4 was also released after Doom 3 so that's another game to add to the "whats?".

Rage is still a really good game and the engine definitely showed how well it can perform, it ran REALLY smoothly for me at max details on a crazy resolution. If they can iron out the texture pop-ins from the sides as well as stop adding millions of invisible walls then Doom 4 would be a spectacle to play. The engine is so much better than what IdTech4 was, that engine was far too heavy on the GPU, it was worse than a Total War game.

Quake 4wasnt too bad to be honest, I liked it until they released 1.4 and above. That patch proper fucked the movement up, it made it well too fast at first I thought it was me being noob but soon realised it was a flaw in the movement physics.
