Game of the year edition games?

I was checking out some games yesterday at the store and I came across "Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition". Did Bob down the street call it his GOTY and they decided to slap that shit on the box?

In my opinion, the game sucked ass.......

I then noticed there are actually quite a few games that claim they are the "GOTY". Claiming to be the "Game of the YEAR" is a huge statement. This is not like saying you are RPG or FPS of the year. This is claiming to be the best game out of all games that came out that year.

What are your thoughts on companies labeling their games like this? Maybe there needs to be one video game award that rules them all. I personally think of the Spike Video Game Awards as being the official awards ceremony.

    What do you guys think?

i never got the moniker tbh.

i know Bethesda's games win GOTY awards but the actual GOTY editions don't win squat

i've always ignored GOTY and instead read it as "One Full ASS Game"

no doubt its their marketing spin for their "game of the year"

GOTY = game plus all dlc, to me. I have no real issue with the title being taken. Most games do this these days.

i guess so... But it seems most will wait until that edition comes out and not bother with buying the DLC'S one by one

And i decide against the one by one dlc buy. But i some times against the edition pack to... So i will wait until prices are fair until i buy an edition version

They should start naming their games "Complete Edition" instead.

I agree, it would be a fairer banner than GOTY.

A complete edition, suits any games with all dlc's

also it sounds a lot better than game of the year edition.. That sounds like its last years game or old fashion

    *Goo

    has appeared with the answer

its still crazy how they can charge so much. since the time you buy the game and all the dlc's, they equal to the price of the GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION in the end anyway

    Thanks to Spyrde/Sylar

I buy the complete editions and normally get them very well priced. Paid less than £15 each for Fallout 3: GotY, Fallout New Vegas Complete, Red Dead Redemption: GotY, Dead Island: GotY, Grand Theft Auto IV Complete etc.

In fact, I rarely buy games that have planned DLC until a complete pack is released nowadays. Happy to wait it out as there's so much available to play across several platforms.

    Nah, I don't think it's that. If anything, it's me that's tight.

For instance, I've yet to play Arkham City but will do once the GotY comes down to a more reasonable price. Paying more than £20 for a game is madness nowadays, they just drop so damn regularly.

I more see it as "the edition that costs you less and includes all the DLC we rape you for earlier"

Exactly right. Many are starting to just call them 'Complete' editions, such as Saints Row 3 and Mortal Kombat.

I tend to steer away from these editions though, DLC or not, most of the time the regular game is more than enough content, I think the only 'GOTY' game I own is Batman AA GOTY on 360. I'll probably get the AC GOTY just to match the two fugly boxes

There should be an overall GOTY award as the Oscars for the films. Then you can distinguish real GOTYs from fake advertisement ones.

Any game can claim to be GOTY as long as they have received the accolade from at least one reputable source.

You just completely misunderstand what i mean. In the question lies the answer, even an average person would understand.

And now you're just being purposefully difficult as well as trying to be be insulting.

Let's get back to the original question, since I've answered yours. Which games have been fake GotY ones?

Let me make an example so that you can understand what i mean more properly.

Lets take BIO Products which are being sold in supermarkets. Most of those products werent produced biologically but they still get that bio logo on the product. Because the ones who made the product just bought that bio logo. But their product isnt bio at all. Same with GOTY.

Replace BIO with GOTY ad you will understand what i mean.
