Suave British secret agent 007 may get some extra tan in upcoming films. Idris Elba, the black star of Prometheus, Thor and Rocknrolla could possibly become the next James Bond.
Producer of the spy franchise Barbara Broccoli is considering Elba among several other candidates after Daniel Craig.
The news came from Naomie Harris, the star of the 23rd James Bond instalment Skyfall that is set for release in November.
Speaking to the Huffington Post while promoting the new movie, Harris said that Broccoli and Elba have already met to discuss the possibility of him starring in the next Bond movie.
“I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond,” she told the Huffington Post.
Rumors that the producers are looking for someone slightly different to play James Bond emerged in January. However James Bond actor Daniel Craig has no intention of quitting Bond voluntarily. He has told the BBC that he will "keep going until they tell me to stop".
"I know there'll be someone after me, and hopefully someone after them – I'm just trying to keep [the series] going," he said.
Elba expressed his interest in the role of James Bond earlier, saying that he’s English and has enough charm to be very suave with the ladies.
"I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy," Harris said.
At the 69th Golden Globe Awards Elba won the Award for Best Actor in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for his portrayal of DCI Luther in the BBC Crime-Thriller series Luther.
I say this could help future bond films and fresh it up

Why do they have to change his race? Fleming created him as a Caucasian British secret agent. There is no need to make him change skin color.

He seems too..big and old to be Bond. Especially with Craig being a much younger Bond. Brosnan was quite old in his last, but still.

Elba as bond? Ok, fine...but imagine Elba being a Bond villain. That would be badass.
I wouldn't complain either way, though. If he's too old, however, then that may make complicate things for having a long enough run at his prime.

The notion that someone's appearance would help future Bond films is exactly why I hate the idea of a black actor playing a well-established white character. He could be my favorite actor and I still think it'd be unnecessary.

Sorry but Bond movies is def NOT the movie to suddenly get a Black actor as star. Would not seem right considering the idea of bond that the movies are based off of.

Thats like getting Morgan Freeman to play Indiana Jones, lol.

Well you know in this day and age of equality this only makes sense. We certainly don't want to offend anyone and we should be sure to nurture an environment of equal opportunity for everyone and look past race.
Also we really should have a latino Rocky Balboa. Latinos, at least in the U.S. are a minority you know. And we certainly don't want to send a message that some people can't do some things because of their race. We certainly want to offend anyone, goodness no!

If you believe the theory that Bond is just a code name, then a black Bond wouldn't exactly be insulting. Bond always changes appearance and personality, a change of skin color isn't that significant.

I have no problems with this as long as the actor is great. Like Naxi said, James Bond is just his code name. People were whining when they heard Daniel Craig was blonde lol.

Well call me crazy but how stupid would it be for 007 to introduce himself as 007. 007 is a code name James Bond is the name he can use in public his real name is classified. Call me Seven double O Seven....Oh Double O Seven your soo suave and dreamy wink wink. Idris Elba is a perfect match a soon as I saw the title of this thread i already knew it was going down. If people have to put up with homosexual superheros in comic books for children Im sure a black 007 won't hurt.
